The Accounting Manager is responsible for the full accounting cycle for two separately incorporated manufacturing companies. The role oversees financial reporting, tax compliance and day to day accounting operations for both entities, supervises accounting and administrative staff across both businesses, and reports directly to a Principal at the parent company. One entity’s accounting is currently performed by an external accounting firm. Transitioning this work in house is a defined objective of the role within the first year. Job-level costing and margin analysis form part of the role’s scope, and are expected to develop over time rather than immediately.
Responsibilities
- Financial Reporting and Close
- Manage month-end, quarter-end and year-end close processes for each entity, including reconciliations, accruals and journal entries
- Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements for each entity
- Prepare financial reporting and analysis for the parent company covering both entities
- Maintain supporting documentation and working papers for year-end
- Accounting Operations
- Maintain separate general ledgers for each entity
- Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable for both businesses
- Provide payroll support and oversight for both entities
- Review and approve journal entries, bank reconciliations and account reconciliations
- Tax and Regulatory Compliance
- Prepare and file HST returns independently for each entity
- Manage payroll remittances and source deductions
- Prepare and file T4 and T4A returns
- Act as the primary point of contact for CRA correspondence and reviews
- Cash Flow and Budgeting
- Prepare and maintain cash flow forecasts separately for each entity
- Support the annual budget process for each business
- Provide variance analysis against budget and forecast
- Cost Accounting and Inventory
- Track inventory and cost of goods sold separately for each entity’s manufacturing operation
- Develop job-level costing and margin reporting to support pricing and operational decisions
- Systems and Process Transition
- Transition one entity’s accounting from an external accounting firm to in-house operation
- Maintain and improve accounting systems, policies and internal controls appropriate to each entity
- Document accounting procedures and close processes for both businesses
- Supervise, mentor and develop accounting and administrative staff across both entities
- Coordinate with department managers where accounting staff are shared across functions
Qualifications
- Required
- Minimum five years of progressive accounting experience
- Demonstrated ownership of a full accounting cycle, including independent responsibility for close
- Experience transitioning or implementing accounting systems and processes
- Working knowledge of Canadian tax compliance, including HST, payroll remittances, T4 and T4A filings and CRA requirements
- Experience with Sage Intacct
- Advanced Excel
- Supervisory experience, including working with staff shared across departments
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to prioritize across two businesses
- Valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle
- Preferred
- CPA designation, or actively pursuing
- Experience managing accounting for multiple separately incorporated entities
- Manufacturing, millwork or construction industry experience
- Job costing and percentage of completion revenue recognition
- Experience with Payworks and ADP
