Role: Accounting Manager (Consulting to Hire)
Pay Rate: $70/hr - $80/hr
Location: Long Island City, NY (*Hybrid - 3 days a week onsite - 2 days WFH*)
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Accounting Manager to oversee our General Ledger (GL) function and lead month-end/year-end close processes. In this role, you will manage GL operations, ensure GAAP compliance, optimize accounting workflows, and mentor a high-performing team. Working closely with the Controller and cross-functional teams, you will play a critical role in driving financial accuracy, internal controls, and scalable reporting processes.
Key Responsibilities
General Ledger & Financial Reporting
- Financial Oversight & GAAP Compliance: Oversee the core GL accounting function, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting in compliance with GAAP and applicable accounting standards.
- Month-End & Year-End Close Management: Prepare and execute the monthly close calendar and checklist. Lead end-to-end close processes, including balance sheet and income statement reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statement preparation.
- Journal Entry Approval & Review: Review and approve recurring and non-recurring journal entries (revenue deferrals, prepaids, payroll, accruals, union-related transactions) ensuring accurate coding and accounting treatment in NetSuite.
- Chart of Accounts & Governance: Partner with the Controller to define, organize, and maintain the Chart of Accounts, classes, and departments to ensure consistent financial categorization.
- Bank Reconciliations & Cash Management: Review monthly bank reconciliations and oversee non-revenue bank account activity.
- Audit & Compliance Support: Serve as a key point of contact for external auditors and regulatory bodies; prepare audit schedules, collect required documentation, and assist with compliance reviews.
- Revenue Recognition Alignment: Collaborate with the Billing and A/R teams to ensure precise revenue recognition (ASC 606) and aligned reporting.
Payroll & Expense Management
- Payroll Accounting & Reconciliations: Review, record, and manage weekly payroll journal entries and accruals. Perform monthly and annual reconciliations of payroll expense accounts against funding reports.
- Liquidity & Disbursement Planning: Monitor bank balances to ensure adequate funding for weekly payroll and expected operational disbursements.
Team Leadership & Operations
- Team Supervision & Development: Lead, mentor, and empower the GL Accounting team by setting clear goals, conducting performance evaluations, and fostering continuous professional growth.
- Process Optimization & Scale: Drive continuous process improvements, automation, and internal control enhancements to build scalable accounting workflows.
- Workforce & Administrative Management: Track team attendance and assist the Controller in reviewing time-off requests (vacation, personal, sick days) to ensure seamless operational coverage.
- Special Projects: Participate in ad-hoc financial initiatives and cross-functional projects assigned by Senior Management.
Qualifications & Competencies
Education & Experience
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (Master's or CPA preferred).
- Experience: 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally combining public accounting (Big Four preferred) and corporate/private industry roles.
- Leadership: Proven track record in leading GL operations and managing accounting staff.
Technical Skills & Knowledge
- Accounting Standards: Deep technical expertise in GAAP, ASC 606 (Revenue Recognition), financial reporting standards, and tax regulations.
- ERP & Systems: Proficiency with major accounting software - NetSuite experience is strongly preferred. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel).
