API Platform Backend Engineer

Build high-traffic APIs with Python, Go, or Rust at Perplexity, shaping infrastructure for developers and AI agents at global scale.

As a backend engineer on the API Platform team, you will design, implement, and operate mission-critical interfaces. Your work spans distributed systems, API gateways, routing, performance optimization, and agent orchestration. You will help define technical strategy as customer and compute demands grow.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design and operate APIs delivering building blocks for frontier intelligence
• Evolve gateway authentication, authorization, quotas, and request routing
• Optimize upstream systems for low latency and high throughput
• Operate SLOs, on-call responsibilities, and incident response
• Collaborate on compute, networking, secrets, and security

Requirements:

• Five-plus years of backend engineering experience
• Proficiency with Python, Go, or Rust
• Experience building platforms used by engineering teams
• Strong knowledge of API design and performance tuning
• Experience operating gateways, proxies, or routing layers
