Applications Engineer

Insight Global

Ottawa · Ontario · Canada

Job Description

Insight Global is seeking an experienced Applications Engineer with a strong background in industrial/OT networking and automation systems to join a highly specialized technical team at a global leader in industrial technology. This is a permanent, full-time, customer-facing role supporting customers across Canada through pre-sales technical guidance, proof-of-concept development, and on-site troubleshooting. The ideal candidate brings a hybrid background spanning industrial networking and automation/PLC systems, and is comfortable working independently in a fast-paced environment with direct customer interaction. This role is primarily remote with roughly 25% travel to customer sites across Canada and occasional international travel for training. Candidates located in Ontario/GTA are preferred, but candidates anywhere in Canada will be considered.

Skills and Requirements

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in industrial/OT networking (pure IT networking backgrounds without factory/industrial exposure will not be considered)
  • Working knowledge of industrial network redundancy protocols - MRP, PRP, HSR, RSTP, and/or XLSR - with the ability to make architectural decisions, not just configure devices
  • Familiarity with PLC platforms and automation systems (Siemens, Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, ABB, or equivalent) - must understand how PLCs interface with network devices
  • Hands-on experience with industrial communication protocols such as PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, OPC UA, Modbus, and/or MQTT
  • Strong customer-facing communication skills - comfortable managing expectations, presenting technical recommendations, and working alongside sales teams
  • Ability to travel ~25% of the time, including occasional international travel for training
  • Experience with Siemens TIA Portal or WinCC SCADA (V7 or V8)
  • Familiarity with Scalance or RUGGEDCOM product lines
  • Bilingual (English/French)
  • CCNP certification or Google/Cisco CyberOps certification
  • Experience working with OEMs or system integrators
  • Background in machine safety or proof-of-concept development
