Overview
In this role you will lead VAXVMS COBOL development and support, shaping the technical landscape of legacy systems. You collaborate with client teams, offshore/dev QA groups, and SMEs to design, implement, and stabilize COBOL applications. You will own fixes, enhancements, and the knowledge base, driving quality and timely delivery within a multi-team environment. This opportunity combines leadership in a niche stack with hands-on coding and problem-solving at scale.
Responsibilities- Lead the VAXVMS development team and coordinate with offshore and onsite teams
- Engage with client business users for requirements, prioritization, design discussions, and estimates
- Conduct root cause analysis, reproduce defects, and guide fixes and enhancements
- Review code and designs with customer and offshore team; participate in group design reviews
- Provide technical support and education to team members; build knowledge repositories
- Manage change control, deployment tasks, and infrastructure-related activities with client/server teams
- Ensure timely, high-quality COBOL solutions aligned with company standards
- Promote knowledge sharing and cross-functional collaboration across the project
- Take ownership of the technical landscape and lifecycle processes for the application
- 10 years of experience in COBOL programming and VAXVMS development
- Strong COBOL programming skills and extensive VAXVMS experience
- Familiarity with VAX COBOL compiler and utilities; VAXVMS file systems and database management
- Experience with ICMS tool and with RDB Relational Database
- Troubleshooting COBOL applications and VAXVMS systems; provide end-user technical support
- Develop, maintain and enhance COBOL programs on VAXVMS; write, test and debug code
- Document code according to company standards; proficient with VAXVMS tools
- Experience in Agile development methodologies (preferred)
- Experience with knowledge acquisition, design, estimation, and customer-facing collaboration
