Overview

As a Backend Engineer on the Repository Management team, you’ll build secure, well-tested backend features using Ruby and GraphQL to support GitLab’s critical repository systems. You’ll translate complex policy and legacy constraints into reliable services that scale for GitLab.com, self-managed, and GitLab Dedicated. You’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve reliability through monitoring, testing, and observability while leveraging AI agents to speed delivery without compromising quality. This role offers the chance to influence branch protection and repository configuration at scale in a collaborative, remote-friendly environment.

Responsibilities
  • Develop secure, tested features with Ruby and GraphQL to improve repository management
  • Tackle complex requirements while preserving system reliability
  • Contribute to backend services, APIs, data models, and business logic
  • Collaborate across functions and teams asynchronously and synchronously
  • Use AI agents to speed up delivery with quality control
  • Write maintainable code following GitLab standards and participate in code reviews
  • Increase production reliability via monitoring, Tier 2 on-call, incident troubleshooting, and observability improvements
  • Share knowledge through documentation and collaboration
Key requirements
  • Backend web applications or services experience
  • Ruby and GraphQL experience or ability to learn
  • Relational databases, SQL, data modeling, caching, background processing, and backend performance
  • Policy/permissions/features familiarity for complexity reliability
  • Backend unit/integration testing, Git and code review familiarity
  • Experience with AI coding tools or agents and ability to review outputs
  • Clear English communication and remote/asynchronous collaboration
  • Ability to manage priorities, handle ambiguity, own work, seek guidance when needed
