AFC Mortgage Group

ABOUT AFC MORTGAGE GROUP

Founded in 1998, AFC Mortgage Group is a family-run, Connecticut-based retail mortgage lender. Growth took off when the second generation, Gaetano and Vito, joined the business. We are not a broker: we underwrite, close, and sell our own loans, which gives us control over the process and the client experience.

We're growing fast (total funded volume):

  • 2023: $27M
  • 2024: $54M
  • 2025: $98M
  • 2026: on pace for ~$110M

We've done that by putting relationships first. We treat every borrower as a long-term client, and we work hand-in-hand with the realtors, attorneys, and partners who refer to us. We start with why someone is buying a home, not just the numbers.

We're hiring and building new business lines, including a bridge lending fund launched in 2025 and our Spanish division. We also build our own technology: a custom CRM and borrower portal alongside Encompass.

This is a senior mortgage position. It is not an entry-level LOA role and it is not primarily a translation position.

We are intentionally willing to pay above market because we want an experienced mortgage professional who can make an immediate impact.

THE ROLE

As our Senior Bilingual Loan Officer Assistant / Loan Partner, you will work directly alongside a producing Spanish-speaking Loan Officer and become a key part of our Spanish division.

This is a front-end, pre-underwriting role.

We aren't looking for someone who simply collects documents and passes them along to processing.

We want someone who can look at a borrower's entire financial picture and understand the loan.

You should be able to review income, assets, credit, liabilities, employment, property information, and loan terms and identify potential issues before the file reaches underwriting.

When a borrower sends you paystubs, W-2s, tax returns, bank statements, or other financial documents, we expect you to understand what you're looking at.

When a Loan Officer asks, "Can this borrower qualify?", you should know how to help answer that question.

Your responsibility is to help structure clean, complete, well-thought-out files before they move deeper into the mortgage process.

At the same time, you'll provide an exceptional experience for Spanish-speaking borrowers by becoming a knowledgeable, consistent point of contact throughout the transaction.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Work directly alongside a producing Spanish-speaking Loan Officer to structure and prepare mortgage files
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for Spanish-speaking borrowers
  • Conduct detailed upfront reviews of borrower documentation before files move to processing and underwriting
  • Calculate and analyze qualifying income, including salaried, hourly, overtime, bonus, commission, self-employed, rental, and other applicable income
  • Review paystubs, W-2s, tax returns, K-1s, bank statements, and other financial documentation
  • Analyze borrower assets, including funds to close, reserves, large deposits, transfers, gifts, and potential sourcing issues
  • Review credit reports, monthly liabilities, payment histories, inquiries, disputed accounts, collections, and other potential qualification issues
  • Calculate and review debt-to-income ratios and funds required to close
  • Understand LTV, CLTV, reserves, mortgage insurance, interested-party contributions, and other key loan-structuring considerations
  • Identify potential underwriting issues before a file is submitted
  • Help determine the appropriate loan structure based on the borrower's financial profile
  • Prepare complete pre-approval packages for Loan Officer review
  • Collect and review borrower documentation and know when a file is actually complete
  • Explain documentation and condition requests clearly in both Spanish and English
  • Maintain accurate loan status, notes, next steps, and important dates within our CRM and Encompass
  • Coordinate and track third-party items such as appraisals, title work, insurance, and verifications
  • Maintain proactive communication with borrowers throughout the mortgage process
  • Coordinate with real estate agents, attorneys, insurance professionals, and other transaction parties
  • Support Spanish-speaking referral partners and help provide them with an exceptional experience
  • Help develop Spanish-language borrower education, FAQs, scripts, text templates, videos, and other resources
  • Work closely with processing and underwriting to resolve issues quickly and keep files moving toward closing
  • Continually identify ways to improve file quality, turn times, and the Spanish-speaking borrower experience

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Required

Fluent Spanish and English — spoken and written.

You must be able to confidently discuss mortgages, income, credit, assets, documentation, and homeownership in both languages.

Spanish and English proficiency will be evaluated during the interview process.

Minimum 3+ years of direct mortgage experience as a Loan Officer Assistant / Loan Partner or in a comparable mortgage origination role.

5+ years of mortgage experience is strongly preferred.

We are specifically looking for someone who has supported mortgage origination and understands how to structure and pre-underwrite a loan, not simply someone who has handled administrative tasks within a mortgage company.

You should already know how to:

  • Calculate qualifying borrower income
  • Analyze W-2 and variable income
  • Review self-employed borrower documentation
  • Review tax returns and applicable business income documentation
  • Analyze assets and funds required to close
  • Identify large deposits and sourcing concerns
  • Read and understand a mortgage credit report
  • Calculate liabilities and debt-to-income ratios
  • Understand LTV and CLTV
  • Identify potential underwriting concerns
  • Understand the documentation needed to support a mortgage approval
  • Structure conventional, FHA, and other common residential mortgage scenarios
  • Recognize when a file needs additional documentation before it reaches underwriting

We are looking for someone who can review a borrower file and think like an underwriter.

Strongly Preferred

  • Active NMLS Mortgage Loan Originator license
  • 5+ years of mortgage experience
  • Encompass experience
  • Previous mortgage underwriting or pre-underwriting experience
  • Conventional and FHA guideline knowledge
  • First-time homebuyer experience
  • Down-payment-assistance program experience
  • Self-employed borrower income-analysis experience
  • Experience with more complex borrower scenarios
  • Experience working directly with Spanish-speaking homebuyers and referral partners

Previous underwriting experience is a significant plus.

WHO WILL SUCCEED HERE

The right person is already very good at mortgages.

You're the person a Loan Officer calls when they have a complicated borrower and want another set of experienced eyes on the file.

You don't just ask borrowers for documents — you understand why the documents are needed.

You don't simply upload a tax return — you know how to read it.

You don't wait for underwriting to discover a problem — you try to identify it before the file ever gets there.

You're organized, proactive, comfortable talking with clients, and willing to take ownership when a file becomes complicated.

Most importantly, you can provide that same level of mortgage expertise and professionalism in both English and Spanish.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • $70,000–$80,000 base salary, depending on mortgage experience, licensing, and qualifications
  • Production-based bonuses, with total compensation of $90,000–$110,000
  • Opportunity for compensation growth as the Spanish division grows
  • Company-paid licensing and continuing education
  • Company-provided laptop and necessary equipment
  • Paid time off
  • Paid holidays
  • Opportunity for increased responsibility and leadership within AFC's Spanish division

WHY THIS OPPORTUNITY IS DIFFERENT

We're not hiring a translator.

We're hiring a mortgage professional who happens to be fully bilingual.

We already have a strong Loan Partner model within AFC. Now we're investing in building the same high-touch, knowledgeable experience for Spanish-speaking borrowers and referral partners.

You will have the opportunity to become an important part of that growth.

You'll help us improve how loans are structured before underwriting, improve the borrower experience, develop Spanish-language resources, support our referral partners, and help shape how our Spanish division operates as it grows.

If you're currently a high-performing bilingual Loan Officer Assistant, Loan Partner, Processor, Pre-Underwriter, or Underwriter and are looking for a larger opportunity, we'd like to talk.

One last thing: to be considered, record a 60-second video on your phone or Loom. Spend 30 seconds in English walking us through a complicated mortgage scenario you helped structure and how you got it to closing, then 30 seconds in Spanish explaining to that borrower what you'd need from them and why. Text it to or email it to , and include your full name.

Benefits:

  • Paid time off
  • Professional development assistance

Experience:

  • mortgage (LOA, processing, or closing): 3 years (Required)

Language:

  • Spanish (Required)
  • Work Location: Remote
