On behalf of our client, we are seeking a hands-on, experienced Controller to join its leadership team in Beltsville, Maryland. This is a contract-to-hire opportunity reporting directly to senior leadership and is ideal for a seasoned accounting professional who thrives in a fast-paced, evolving environment and enjoys leading teams through growth and change.

This company is part of a larger organization undergoing significant transformation, including integration efforts and a planned ERP transition. This role offers the opportunity to make an immediate impact by leading accounting operations, strengthening oversight, and supporting a high-performing finance function.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the monthly close process and help ensure timely, accurate financial reporting
• Review account reconciliations, financial statements, and supporting schedules
• Manage day-to-day accounting department operations
• Supervise and review the work of approximately 14 employees across accounting and payroll
• Oversee payroll processes, including union and certified payroll
• Maintain compliance within a SOX-controlled, public company environment
• Partner with leadership and parent company stakeholders on reporting, approvals, and financial oversight
• Provide hands-on leadership, guidance, and mentorship to the accounting team
• Support process improvements and help drive efficiency during ongoing organizational change

Qualifications

• Active CPA required
• Proven experience in a Controller-level leadership role
• Strong accounting oversight, review, and team leadership experience
• Construction industry experience strongly preferred
• Public accounting background highly preferred
• Experience working in a SOX-compliant and/or public company environment required
• Union payroll experience is a plus
• Certified payroll experience is a plus
• Ability to thrive in a changing, growth-oriented environment
• Collaborative, positive, and proactive leadership style

Work Environment

• Fully onsite in Beltsville, MD
• Flexible start times available:
• 6:00 AM – 3:00 PM
• 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM
• 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
• Business casual office environment
