Function & Purpose of the Position


The Parkland School Division currently has a Probationary/Continuing Full-time (1.0 FTE) High School teaching position available at Spruce Grove Composite High School.


The successful applicant will teach courses within the Career and Technology Studies (CTS) Communication Technology (COM) Program of Studies (Media, Design & Communication Technologies cluster). You will collaborate as a team member of the CTS department and as part of an interdepartmental collaborative response team.


You will plan and deliver innovative, hands-on lessons based on the Alberta CTS COM Program of Studies, assess and evaluate student learning formatively and summatively, build student digital portfolios, and provide strong intervention supports for students to reach their full learning potential. Strong technology skills, expertise in digital media software, and experience working with and programming for students from Indigenous and other diverse backgrounds are assets.


As a teacher, you are responsible for demonstrating the competencies and abilities of the Alberta Education Teaching Quality Standard (TQS). You will work with students across single credit module pathways, differentiate curriculum for all learners, and collaborate with staff to foster a welcoming, safe, respectful, and inclusive environment.


Specific Courses & Curricula Modules Taught


The position covers modular single-credit courses across Introductory, Intermediate, and Advanced levels within Alberta's CTS Communication Technology (COM) Program of Studies. Specific areas include: Photography, Graphic Design, Audio/Video, Animation, Web Design, Advertising, Electronic Layout & Publishing, Screenprinting, and Logo Design.


Detailed Duties & Responsibilities


Instructional Support



  • Apply effective planning, instruction, and assessment practices to meet the learning needs of every student.



  • Provide evidence to support student learning by using a wide range of assessment tools and strategies (including rubric-based project evaluations, practical skill checks, and digital portfolio reviews).


  • Use and integrate computer hardware and digital media software (e.g., Adobe Creative Cloud, camera & audio equipment) as teaching tools to meet module outcomes.


  • Integrate experiential and project-based learning opportunities into the curriculum (e.g., real-world client design briefs, video broadcasts, web development projects).


  • Emphasize core competencies across all modules: communication, information management, critical thinking, problem-solving, digital ethics, and copyright compliance.


  • Provide timely feedback on student learning and facilitate regular student self-assessments and peer critiques.


  • Differentiate, modify, and adapt CTS module pathways for individual students, including implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) in collaboration with the student support team.


  • Apply foundational knowledge about First Nations, Métis, and Inuit for the benefit of all students.



Behaviour & Lab Safety



  • Prepare, observe, document, and monitor individual student progress and behavior.


  • Maintain a safe, orderly, and secure computer lab and studio environment through behavioral management strategies, workstation routines, and ergonomic/health safety practices.


  • Maintain security for hardware, software, camera kit inventory, and student digital files.



Communication & Reporting



  • Establish and maintain positive, professional relationships with students, staff, parents, and the local business/media community.


  • Maintain up-to-date records of module completions, assessments, attendance, planning, and progress reports.


  • Maintain home-school communication using digital platforms (e.g., Google Classroom, PowerSchool, email).



C classroom & Studio Management



  • Develop a positive, collaborative learning environment that encourages creative risk-taking, critical thinking, and student leadership.



  • Implement effective time and room management strategies to ensure optimal access to hardware, software, and studio equipment.



Student Supervision & Community Engagement



  • Supervise and assist students during field trips, guest speaker sessions, or special media events.


  • Guide students in real-world CTS client services projects, school event coverage (e.g., video streaming, photography, graphic design for school clubs), and community outings.


Education



  • Bachelor of Education Degree (Secondary) with a preference for a major/minor or specialization in CTS Communication Technology or Media & Design.


  • Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate.


  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, First Aid, and Mental Health First Aid certifications are assets.



Experience & Technical Qualifications



  • Experience: Teaching High School CTS courses, specifically Communication Technology (COM) modules.


  • Technical Software Proficiency: Deep working knowledge of industry-standard creative and technical tools, such as Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Animate)


  • Hardware & Studio Expertise: Hands-on experience operating and troubleshooting DSLR/mirrorless cameras, studio lighting, studio audio recorders, broadcast gear, and computer lab hardware/networks.


  • Assessment & Pedagogy: Strong background in module-based assessment, project-based learning, portfolio evaluation, and differentiating instruction for diverse learners.



Equivalencies, such as transferable experience and/or other relevant CTS specialization, will be considered.

Working Conditions



  • Teachers work indoors in specialized computer labs and media production spaces, except when supervising outdoor photo/video shoots or field trips.


  • Scheduled working hours are determined by the specific position (1.0 FTE over a 10-month school calendar paid out over 12 months).
