Overview

As a Data Automation Engineer, you design, develop and maintain automated data processes across on-premises and cloud platforms to boost operational efficiency. You will work within the Data Systems Team to deliver integrated data pipelines, automation frameworks and reliable data movement using a modern Microsoft stack. You’ll collaborate with IT and business units to standardise automation, monitor production services and support critical workflows. This is a hands-on role with a strong focus on speed, quality and scalable data solutions. You’ll contribute to Birketts’ data-driven strategy and hybrid working culture.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop and maintain automated data integrations between business applications
  • Build, optimise ETL/ELT processes and data pipelines
  • Develop automation solutions using APIs, scheduled events and event-driven workflows
  • Monitor, troubleshoot and optimise data automation processes for reliable delivery
  • Work with Microsoft Fabric and Data Factory to enable data movement across cloud and on-premises
  • Create reusable automation frameworks and standards for repeatable delivery
  • Identify opportunities to automate manual processes and improve efficiency
  • Provide 3rd line support for automation and integration incidents
  • Document technical procedures and support notes
  • Collaborate with IT and business teams to deliver sustainable data automation solutions
  • Monitor production data platforms, integrations and automation services
  • Be prepared for additional duties as needed by line managers
Key requirements
  • 4–6 years in Data Engineering, Integration Engineering or Automation Engineering
  • Strong SQL Server and T-SQL skills
  • Experience developing ETL/ELT processes and data pipelines
  • Experience with APIs, integrations and data exchange technologies
  • Experience using Microsoft Azure services
  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric or similar cloud data platforms
  • Good understanding of cloud-based data solutions
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills
  • Experience supporting production systems and business-critical services
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement
  • Collaborative working style across IT and business units
  • Strong attention to detail and structured problem-solving
