Newbury or Swindon, five days a week on site

Permanent
Company & role
This role sits with a global IT services and infrastructure provider that has been building, running and modernising enterprise IT estates since the mid nineties. A significant part of what they do is hands on data centre work for major enterprise customers, covering build and installation through to break fix, technology refresh and decommission.
You would be based permanently on one customer site, working inside a live enterprise data centre. The role is the physical face of the service: hardware installs, fault diagnosis, structured cabling, asset accuracy and support for change and project activity. This is genuine data centre engineering rather than desk side or service desk work.
Active SC clearance is required.
Why This Role Stands Out
Permanent on site presence in a large scale enterprise data centre, so you are on real hardware every week rather than making occasional visits
Clear earning potential on top of base through a structured on call rota and paid overtime
A stable, long running customer engagement rather than short term project churn
Broad exposure across enterprise compute, storage and network platforms
Backed by a large services business, so there are routes into wider infrastructure, project and managed services work
Key Responsibilities
- Install, configure, maintain and replace server, storage, network and peripheral hardware
- Diagnose and resolve hardware faults within agreed service levels, including break fix activity and component replacement
- Rack, stack, cable and decommission equipment, keeping cable management, labeling and positioning to site standard
- Install and manage structured cabling across copper and fibre, and support power activity including PDU monitoring and equipment power cycling
- Carry out firmware upgrades, physical health checks and visual inspections of data centre equipment
- Coordinate with third party vendors on warranty and support activity, and escort authorised personnel within secure areas
- Log, update and escalate incidents, service requests and changes through ITSM tooling, and support major incident recovery and root cause investigation
- Support technology refresh, migration, relocation and disaster recovery testing activity
- Maintain accurate asset records, rack layouts and cable schedules for audit purposes
Ideal Experience
- Hardware engineering experience gained inside a data centre environment, rather than office or desk side support
- Enterprise server hardware exposure, with HP, Dell or IBM particularly useful, although other vendors such as Lenovo or Cisco UCS are equally welcome
- Experience with enterprise storage platforms and network equipment installation and replacement
- Structured cabling standards across copper and fibre, plus a working understanding of data centre power and cooling fundamentals
- Comfortable working to SLAs and KPIs in a customer facing environment, with a good grasp of incident, problem and change management
- Experience using ITSM platforms such as ServiceNow, Remedy or Jira
- Active SC clearance
- Willing to take part in an on call rota of one week on, one week off
- Desirable: ITIL Foundation, CompTIA Server+, or vendor certifications from Dell, HPE, Cisco or Lenovo
If you enjoy being hands on with enterprise hardware and want a site based role with real ownership of the physical estate, this one is worth a look.
