London · On · Canada

On-Call: Rotational after-hours/weekend coverage with additional compensation

About the Opportunity

We are looking for a hands-on Data Centre Facility Technician to join a growing data centre operations team in London, Ontario.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working with physical infrastructure, equipment, cabling and facility systems and wants to build a career in a critical data centre environment.

The role is approximately 70–80% facilities/infrastructure focused , with the remaining 20–30% involving hands-on data centre and IT support. You will help keep the facility running safely and reliably while supporting client equipment and responding to operational issues.

This is not a traditional desk-based IT or network administration role . We are looking for someone who enjoys being hands-on, troubleshooting equipment, working with cabling and physically supporting the data centre environment.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Conduct regular data centre walk-throughs to monitor equipment and identify potential issues.
  • Monitor and respond to facility, environmental and infrastructure alarms .
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues and coordinate with contractors when required.
  • Perform basic preventive and predictive maintenance on facility systems.
  • Support operation and monitoring of HVAC, cooling, UPS, generators, switchgear and related infrastructure .
  • Perform hands-on rack-and-stack activities , including installation and movement of servers and equipment.
  • Install, move and troubleshoot copper and fibre cabling .
  • Perform emergency cabling, patching and equipment connections.
  • Support client remote-hands requests , including equipment reboots and basic hardware assistance.
  • Coordinate new equipment installations within server rooms.
  • Maintain data centre tools, cables, hardware and inventory.
  • Support security, access control and health & safety requirements.
  • Assist with generator inspections and other scheduled facility checks.
  • Work with internal technology teams, contractors and clients to resolve issues.
  • Maintain accurate facility documentation, drawings and maintenance records.
  • Respond to trouble tickets and ensure issues are resolved within required service levels.

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Minimum 1 year of hands-on data centre experience preferred; exceptional candidates with less experience may also be considered.
  • Practical experience with rack-and-stack, server installation and physical hardware .
  • Strong hands-on cabling experience — candidates should be comfortable discussing and working with both copper and fibre .
  • Understanding of single-mode vs. multi-mode fibre and common fibre connector types.
  • Experience physically connecting and moving cables, equipment and peripherals.
  • Understanding of electrical, mechanical and environmental systems within a facility.
  • Familiarity with UPS systems, generators, switchgear, HVAC, cooling systems and building management systems is an asset.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical/mechanical drawings and single-line diagrams .
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Comfortable using hand tools and cabling tools.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established procedures.
  • Excellent communication and customer-service skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with facilities, technology, contractors and client teams.

Important: Hands-On Experience Matters

We are particularly interested in candidates who have actually performed the hands-on work , rather than candidates whose experience is primarily theoretical or desk-based.

For example, you should be comfortable explaining your experience with:

  • Server rack installation and hardware
  • Copper and fibre cabling
  • Physical troubleshooting
  • Connecting equipment to NICs and peripherals
  • KVM equipment
  • Data centre facility systems

Candidates coming from data centre contractors, large-scale data centre operators or similar critical infrastructure environments are encouraged to apply.

Work Schedule & On-Call

The regular schedule is Monday–Friday , with coverage required between approximately 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Flexible start/end times may be available depending on operational requirements.

The role also participates in an on-call rotation to support critical data centre operations outside regular business hours.

  • Weekday on-call coverage: approximately 5:00 p.m. to 8:00/8:30 a.m.
  • Weekend on-call coverage: Saturday and Sunday
  • Current rotation: approximately 3 weeks on / 3 weeks off
  • 2 hours of pay per day while on call
  • Call-outs paid at 1.5x overtime
  • 4-hour minimum call-out , even when the actual intervention is shorter

Location Requirement

The data centre is located in the south end of London, near Highway 401 .

Because of the on-call requirements and response-time expectations, candidates should ideally live within approximately one hour of the facility .

Candidates relocating to the area may be considered, but relocation costs would be the candidate's responsibility .

Why Consider This Opportunity?

  • Join a critical data centre infrastructure environment where your work directly supports business continuity and technology operations.
  • Gain exposure to both data centre technology and facility infrastructure .
  • Develop hands-on experience across electrical, mechanical, HVAC, UPS, generator, cabling and monitoring systems .
  • Work in a collaborative environment alongside facilities and technology professionals.
  • Opportunity to grow your technical career within a specialized and increasingly important industry.
  • 3 weeks of vacation to start.
  • Additional compensation for on-call and emergency call-outs.

Nice-to-Have Qualifications

The following would be considered assets:

  • Mechanical or electrical trade training/apprenticeship
  • Electrical or mechanical service experience
  • Building automation/control systems experience
  • Access control/security systems experience
  • ITIL certification
  • Experience in a critical infrastructure, telecommunications or large-scale data centre environment
