Data Governance Analyst

In this role you will support Baker McKenzie's data governance objectives by profiling the data landscape, identifying critical data elements, and maintaining business glossary, catalog, and lineage documentation. You will collaborate with data stewards and working groups to ensure accurate, current governance artefacts as the firm evaluates its Enterprise Data & AI Platform. The position focuses on delivering trusted data assets to enable informed decisions and compliant data practices. This role offers an opportunity to shape governance in a professional services environment with cross-functional impact.

• Profile source systems to baseline data quality and structure for domain onboarding
• Incorporate profiling findings into transformation scoping and prioritization
• Shortlist 5–10 critical data elements with Business Data Steward and confirm business criticality
• Build and maintain business glossary, data catalog, and lineage across domains
• Document each domain's system of record for the Minimum Viable Governance Pack
• Support Domain Working Groups with data analysis, reporting, and documentation per six-step model
• Assist Data Quality Analyst with technical details behind quality thresholds and dashboards
• Write and maintain SQL queries to extract, profile, and validate data across source systems (SQL Server)
• Contribute to catalog and metadata tooling selection as the lakehouse platform evolves

• 3+ years in data governance, data analyst, BI, or data quality/profiling
• Experience building or maintaining a data catalog, glossary, or metadata repository
• Ability to translate profiling results and data quality issues into plain-language recommendations
• Experience supporting a data governance or data quality program; legal services experience is a plus but not required
• Hands-on SQL Server experience with T-SQL, profiling at scale, across multiple source systems
• Working knowledge of Azure Data Factory / Synapse, Power BI, and Purview (or equivalent metadata/catalog tooling)
• Strong SQL skills and ability to work in SQL Server Management Studio
• Data profiling capability and ability to produce usable documentation for non-technical stakeholders
• Comfort working in a lean, evolving structure across profiling, cataloguing, and governance initiatives
