Job Title: Senior Data Engineer / Data Modeller (GCP & BigQuery)

Job Description

This role focuses on designing and delivering the data foundations for a cloud-based Operational Resilience platform. You will identify, source, structure, and model data within Google Cloud Platform (GCP), primarily using BigQuery, to create high-quality datasets that underpin analytics, AI initiatives, and business decision-making. The emphasis is on data discovery, data architecture, and data modelling rather than Spark development, dashboard engineering, or visualisation work.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, analyse, and document data sources required to meet business and application requirements for the Operational Resilience platform.
  • Work closely with application, engineering, and business teams to understand data dependencies, lineage, and how data flows across the organisation.
  • Design, implement, and maintain robust logical and physical data models within GCP BigQuery.
  • Develop scalable data structures and data integration approaches that can support future AI, machine learning, and advanced analytics capabilities.
  • Ensure data quality, consistency, governance, and integrity across multiple enterprise data sources.
  • Support data mapping, transformation, and optimisation activities to improve performance and usability of datasets.
  • Collaborate with solution architects and data engineering teams to define and promote best practices for cloud-native data solutions.
  • Create clear documentation for data models, metadata, data lineage, and business definitions to support transparency and reuse.
  • Contribute to the ongoing enhancement and evolution of the operational resilience data estate, ensuring it remains fit for purpose as business needs grow.

Essential Skills

  • Strong, hands-on experience working within Google Cloud Platform (GCP) in data-focused roles.
  • Proven experience with BigQuery data architecture and data modelling in a production environment.
  • Extensive experience in data modelling, including the design of conceptual, logical, and physical data models.
  • Strong understanding of data governance, metadata management, and data quality principles.
  • experience identifying, sourcing, and integrating data from multiple enterprise systems.
  • Ability to translate complex business requirements into scalable and maintainable data models.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical teams.
  • Solid proficiency in SQL for querying, transforming, and optimising data.
  • Deep knowledge of data architecture and data management practices within cloud environments.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • experience supporting AI, machine learning, or advanced analytics initiatives with well-structured datasets.
  • Knowledge of operational resilience, risk, regulatory, or financial services environments.
  • Understanding of cloud data architecture best practices and patterns for scalable, secure solutions.
  • experience working within Agile delivery teams and contributing to iterative, collaborative development.
  • A highly analytical mindset with a strong interest in understanding how data flows through an organisation.
  • Ability to document and communicate complex data concepts in a clear and accessible manner to diverse stakeholders.

Why Work Here?

You will join a forward-looking environment that values high-quality data as a strategic asset and invests in modern cloud technologies. The culture encourages collaboration between business and technology teams, giving you the opportunity to shape data foundations that directly influence decision-making and innovation. You will work on impactful initiatives in operational resilience and analytics, with scope to deepen your expertise in cloud data architecture, AI, and advanced analytics. The organisation supports continuous learning and professional growth, offering exposure to complex data challenges and the chance to contribute to best practices in cloud-native data solutions.

Work Environment

The role is based in a modern, cloud-centric data environment built on Google Cloud Platform, with BigQuery as a core technology. You will collaborate with application engineers, solution architects, data engineers, and business stakeholders, typically working in cross-functional teams that follow Agile delivery practices. The environment emphasises structured documentation, data governance, and high standards of data quality. Work is focused on data architecture, modelling, and integration rather than front-end visualisation or Spark-based development, enabling you to specialise in core data engineering and modelling disciplines.
