Overview
In this role you will design, build and operate mission-critical database platforms underpinning research and business operations. You will partner with research and engineering teams to deliver highly available, scalable data services across on-premises and AWS. You will drive automation, improve performance, and evolve patterns for provisioning, replication and monitoring. - Build, operate and scale distributed database services across on-premises and AWS
- Support large-scale deployments of PostgreSQL, MSSQL Server, MySQL and CockroachDB with high availability and performance
- Design and implement automation for provisioning, upgrades, replication and monitoring using Python, Ansible and Terraform
- Improve performance tuning, indexing strategies and storage design
- Collaborate with application and research teams to meet scalability and latency requirements
- Participate in out-of-hours rota to support critical systems
- Stay current with industry trends and assess new database technologies
- Define SLAs, KPIs and monitoring strategies for reliability and security
- Identify and resolve stability, security and capacity issues across the platform
- Relational database experience with PostgreSQL, MSSQL Server, MySQL, CockroachDB or similar
- Understanding of database internals: query execution, concurrency, replication, indexing and partitioning
- Hands-on experience running databases at scale
- Strong Linux and Python automation skills
- Familiarity with Terraform, Ansible, Jenkins, Dagger, ArgoCD or similar IaC/tools
- Experience deploying and operating services in containerised or Kubernetes environments
- Knowledge of AWS data platform services (RDS, Aurora, S3, EC2, EKS)
- Familiarity with observability stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, Elk or OTel)
