Overview

As Director, Forward Deployed Engineering at GSK’s Enterprise AI team, you will lead the FDE function within the CMC R&D engine, delivering AI-enabled solutions from first production versions to handoff for scale. You will shape strategy, mentor a senior engineering team, and maintain technical credibility on strategic engagements, connecting virtual process models with real-world signals. This role drives digital twin, physical AI, and self-driving lab initiatives to accelerate CMC development and manufacturing. You will work closely with BU sponsors and cross-functional partners to turn ambiguous R&D problems into production-grade systems with measurable impact.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the Forward Deployed Engineering function: strategy, structure, hiring, development, and standards
  • Hire, mentor, and develop the FDE team with clear career paths
  • Set AI-native engineering standards: agent workflows, prompt/pattern libraries, handoff hygiene
  • Own relationships with Director/Senior Director BU sponsors across units
  • Lead the most strategic FDE engagements and defend portfolio decisions
  • Coordinate with Solutions Engineering and Operations Engineering on the delivery pipeline
  • Influence vendor strategy and tooling for AI-native practice
  • Ensure FDE operates within governance (Code Orange, Responsible AI, Accountability) from prototype to production
  • Provide regular reporting on FDE performance, pipeline, outcomes, and team development
Key requirements
  • Extensive software and AI/ML engineering experience with leadership of senior engineering teams
  • Proven track record delivering AI ideas from concept to working software quickly in customer-facing roles
  • Deep expertise in at least three areas (digital twins, predictive modeling, document generation, multi-agent orchestration/automation, Physical AI)
  • Daily use of AI coding agents (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Databricks AI Assistant)
  • Experience hiring, mentoring, and developing senior engineering talent
