Embedded Systems Engineer

Anzen

London · England · United Kingdom

Salary: ~£60,000 per annum + Equity options (negotiable)

Start Date : Jan - Feb 2027

At Anzen, we are revolutionising the clean energy transition through our breakthrough solid-state heat pump technology. Our flagship product, the Anzen Climate Wall, is a plug-and-play solution designed to provide efficient heating, cooling, and ventilation without traditional compressors or F-gases. We are seeking a skilled Embedded Firmware & PCBA Design Engineer to lead embedded control development and custom PCB design for our next-generation HVAC systems.

In this role, you will be responsible for end-to-end embedded systems design, combining hands-on PCBA design (schematics, PCB layout) with firmware development for real-time control of thermoelectric modules, fans, sensors, and actuators. You will work closely with mechanical, thermal, and controls engineers to bring reliable, production-ready electronics from concept through testing, prototyping, and compliance.

About Anzen

Key Responsibilities

  • PCBA Design & Hardware Prototyping: Design, review, and iterate custom PCBs (schematic capture, layout, component selection) for control, relay/mains switching, and sensor sub-systems.
  • Embedded Firmware Development: Write, test, and maintain clean, modular C/C++ /python firmware for microcontrollers to manage control loops, communication protocols, and system FSMs.
  • Control Strategies & Feedback Loops: Implement real-time control algorithms, cause-and-effect control logic, and sensor feedback integration for optimized thermal performance.
  • Lab Bench Testing & Validation: Perform hands-on lab bench testing, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing, signal integrity verification, and debugging using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and test rigs.
  • Compliance & Safety: Ensure all electrical and electronic designs comply with relevant British Standards (BS), IEC, and CE requirements for white goods/HVAC products.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with mechanical, thermal, and external manufacturing/consultancy partners to streamline wiring harness integration, board bring-up, and DFM.
  • BOM Optimization & Supplier Liaison: Work on bill of materials (BOM) cost reduction, component sourcing alternatives, and communicate directly with component suppliers and fabrication partners when needed.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education/Experience: Degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics, Embedded Systems, or related field with proven hands-on experience in embedded product development. 7+ years experience in white goods industry
  • PCB Layout Skills: Proficiency with PCB CAD tools (e.g., Altium Designer, Eagle, KiCAD) for schematic capture and multi-layer board layout.
  • Embedded C/C++ Firmware: Strong proficiency in C/C++ firmware development for resource-constrained microcontrollers, peripheral drivers, and communication interfaces (UART, SPI, I2C, Modbus).
  • System Prototyping & Testing: Demonstrated experience with circuit debugging, soldering, bench prototyping, and test rig construction.
  • HVAC/Thermal Experience (Bonus): Understanding of thermoelectric/peltier control systems, power electronics, PID loop tuning, or HVAC automation standards.

What We Offer

  • No Day Feels the Same : There will be significant engineering challenges and breakthroughs to celebrate.
  • Flexible Work Environment : We offer a flexible work environment to accommodate your lifestyle while ensuring productivity and creativity.
  • Impactful Work : Join us in our mission to make clean energy accessible and scalable, contributing to the fight against climate change and the eradication of fuel poverty.
