Engineering Manager (Data)

V.Group

Glasgow · Scotland · United Kingdom

Engineering & Build

  • Design and build the data pipelines and ETL underpinning a medallion platform architecture — bronze, silver and gold layers — across ingestion, transformation, storage and serving.
  • Build and maintain the data platform hands-on across Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Fabric.
  • Implement tenancy isolation, security and performance controls within the pipelines, for both the V.Group managed fleet and external customers.
  • Implement mastered data within the platform, working to master data definitions and stewardship owned elsewhere in the data function.
  • Build the gold-layer data products and the interfaces that serve them, for downstream integrations and for MCP-based AI and agent consumption.

Standards & Technical Leadership

  • Translate the target architecture into working technical standards and hold the team to them in code.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership, including design and code review.
  • Act as the senior technical anchor for the data engineering team, mentoring engineers as the team scales.
  • Implement data quality, lineage and observability controls across the pipelines.
  • Direct a dedicated DBA within the IT support team on day-to-day database administration and operational support.

People and Team Management

  • People management of direct team members – setting and measuring objectives
  • ‘Dotted line’ management of third-party resource, measuring performance and addressing issues with the partner
  • Manage overall performance of the team using quantitative and qualitative metrics

Delivery

  • Partner with the Product Team to deliver data-as-a-product capabilities.
  • Collaborate with engineering squads and development partners to deliver to standard.
  • Support the Architecture and Engineering functions on technical strategy, estimation and roadmap feasibility.
  • Senior, hands-on data engineering experience, with a track record of setting technical standards.
  • Strong command of the modern data stack (pipelines/ETL, warehouse or lakehouse, SQL, Python, orchestration).
  • Deep hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric and Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Proven experience designing and operating pipelines and ETL within a medallion (bronze / silver / gold) platform architecture.
  • Experience implementing data quality, lineage and observability practices.
  • Working understanding of master data management concepts and how mastered data is modelled and served.
  • Demonstrable experience managing and coaching engineers
  • Comfortable in a hybrid internal / outsourced delivery model.
  • ERP experience, ideally in maritime or another asset-intensive domain.
  • Experience building multi-tenant data platforms serving external customers.
  • Cloud data platform experience (AWS, Azure or GCP) and streaming / real-time data.
  • Wider data product experience across platforms such as Apache Spark, Databricks and Snowflake.
  • Exposure to AI / ML data pipelines and emerging agent interfaces such as MCP.
  • Hands-on master data management delivery experience.
  • Relevant cloud or data engineering certifications.
