Engineering Manager, Security

In this senior, hands-on role, you set the direction for security engineering within The Economist Group and lead a high-performing team. You translate business priorities and technology strategy into practical security outcomes to protect data and enable secure product delivery. You drive the security roadmap, architecture, and governance across cloud, applications, and endpoints. You lead initiatives to improve detection, response, and resilience in a modern, cloud-first environment.

• Lead and develop a high-performing security team with clear priorities and growth opportunities
• Own the security engineering roadmap, aligning with risk appetite and business priorities
• Plan and deliver cross-functional security projects within time and budget
• Manage security technology and service providers with governance and value focus
• Provide concise updates on delivery, risk and outcomes to senior stakeholders
• Shape cyber-security strategy into a practical engineering plan
• Define security architecture, standards, guardrails and baselines across cloud, apps, endpoints, identity and data
• Ensure scalable, automated security capabilities for a cloud-first organisation
• Inform priorities with emerging threats and regulatory expectations
• Balance security, resilience, usability and delivery speed to enable safe innovation
• Drive secure software development practices, including code and dependency scanning
• Oversee vulnerability management with risk-based remediation
• Support and test incident-response, ensuring lessons lead to improvements
• Perform security assessments, threat modelling, and control reviews with actionable remediations
• Increase automation across security operations for better coverage and response times

• Proven experience leading security engineering, platform engineering, cloud-security or application-security teams
• Track record delivering complex security or technology programs across multiple teams
• Experience shaping security strategy into clear roadmaps and measurable outcomes
• Strong practical knowledge of AWS security, cloud-native architecture and modern engineering practices
• Experience with secure CI/CD practices (CircleCI or comparable platforms)
• Knowledge of application, code, dependency and infrastructure-as-code security scanning
• Experience with vulnerability management, threat detection and security monitoring
• Understanding of secure architecture, threat modelling, incident response and control design
• Excellent written and verbal communication for senior stakeholders
