Environmental Advisor (Intermediate)

About the Role

This is an office-based environmental planning and permitting role supporting a senior, experienced team at a leading energy infrastructure organization. The work spans two related streams: high-volume, short-duration temporary permitting tied to pipe integrity projects, and longer-term, risk-based permit investigation work supporting a growth project portfolio. The balance between these two streams takes shape after the person is in seat. The role sits formally under Post Construction Monitoring, but the day-to-day scope is broader than the title suggests, and candidates should come in expecting that breadth.

The ideal candidate is an intermediate-level environmental planning and permitting professional, roughly 1 to 4 years into their career, with a background in consulting or industry-side planning rather than field inspection or construction supervision. They can describe, in concrete terms, resolving or closing out a permitting or compliance issue from an in-house planning seat. They are comfortable working alongside senior colleagues, contributing independently, and growing into more advanced responsibilities over time. CER filing experience is a meaningful differentiator here, as is any broader provincial regulatory exposure, particularly with Alberta Environment and Parks.

Key Responsibilities

1. Manage environmental planning and permitting across pipeline integrity, operations and maintenance, facilities, and growth project scopes, including reclamation, monitoring, and corrective action tracking


2. Develop and execute strategies for obtaining environmental regulatory authorizations and for responding to regulatory, public, and legislative scrutiny of project environmental issues


3. Represent company projects to regulators, industry groups, environmental groups, landowners, Indigenous peoples, and the public


4. Provide environmental and regulatory guidance to development, acquisition, and construction project teams across prospecting, proposal, definition, and implementation phases


5. Collaborate with internal Land, Community Relations, Indigenous Relations, Regulatory, Legal, and Safety teams to align on project objectives and permitting timelines


6. Coordinate and manage external consultants, including preparing RFPs, evaluating bids, negotiating scope and budget, and providing ongoing oversight of consultant deliverables


7. Provide project management for permitting and compliance work, covering strategy development, execution planning, budgeting, and scheduling


8. Identify and work to resolve environmental legal or process issues while managing multiple complex projects simultaneously under tight and occasionally conflicting deadlines

Required Skills & Experience

• 1 to 4 years of experience in environmental planning and permitting for pipelines and other energy projects, demonstrated through specific employers, projects, and deliverables in job history


• Bachelor's degree in environmental sciences, geography, public policy, or a related field (master's degree preferred)


• In-house or consulting office-based environmental planning and permitting experience on major projects; a background limited to environmental inspection or construction supervision does not satisfy this requirement


• Comprehensive knowledge of environmental laws, regulations, and practices pertaining to pipeline and energy project development


• Previous experience with the federal permitting process for pipelines in Canada


• Demonstrated experience solving complex and unique regulatory, permitting, and compliance issues on major projects


• Ability to be on-site at the downtown Calgary office Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday (non negotiable)


• Valid driver's licence for occasional in-province site visits


• Native or bilingual English proficiency

Preferred Skills

• CER (Canada Energy Regulator) filing experience; given preference when found, as many candidates in market are provincially focused


• Broader provincial environmental regulatory experience, particularly with Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP); AER-specific experience is not required


• Prior direct experience engaging with regulators in a representation capacity


• Experience working with Aboriginal communities and non-governmental organizations


• Early-to-mid-career profile that brings energy and curiosity to a senior-heavy team, over a senior-level profile


• Prior work with a consultancy or contractor that has supported major Canadian energy infrastructure clients; where present, this should be clearly identified in the resume or cover note
