Our long-serving finance lead is retiring, and we’re looking for an experienced, self-sufficient finance professional to take over. This is our only in-house finance role . You’ll run the full finance function day to day, from bank reconciliations and payment runs through to monthly management accounts and budgets. You’ll report to the COO, working closely with both the COO and CEO on a daily basis, and be supported by our external accountants who handle year-end.

As the business grows, the role will develop with it, including supporting future changes to our company structure.

What you’ll do

  • Reconcile the bank daily and make ad-hoc daily payments
  • Record payments in and out in Xero and our MRP system
  • Daily processing of supplier bills, ensuring accurate coding and cost allocation.
  • Manage the purchase and sales ledgers (AP/AR) with the purchasing and sales teams, including weekly supplier payment runs and credit control
  • Handle multi-currency invoicing, receipts and payments for our international customers and suppliers, including import & export VAT admin
  • Update the weekly cash-flow forecast for management review
  • Produce the monthly management accounts from Xero and MRP data
  • Manage the HMRC PAYE and VAT balances and payments, and support our external payroll provider
  • Help build and maintain cash-flow budgets with the senior management team and report performance against them
  • Keep stock and asset records aligned with the accounts, and support grant reporting when required
  • Adapt finance processes and reporting as the business grows and its structure develops
  • Act as the main point of contact for our external accountants, payroll provider and HMRC

What we’re looking for

  • Proven experience running the finance function in an SME, ideally as the sole or lead finance person
  • A strong working knowledge of Xero, AP/AR, reconciliations and month-end
  • Experience producing management accounts and cash-flow forecasts without day-to-day supervision
  • Strong Excel skills and real attention to detail
  • Self-motivated and organised, able to manage your own deadlines
  • Clear communication and discretion with confidential information

Nice to have

  • AAT, part-qualified ACCA or CIMA, or equivalent experience
  • Experience of foreign-currency transactions and export VAT
  • Experience of multi-company or intercompany accounting
  • Experience in manufacturing, engineering or rental, and with MRP/ERP systems
