Founding Engineer

Goodley

Remote · Nationwide · United Kingdom

Compliance shouldn't be the thing that stops great teams doing great work.

Every FCA-regulated firm carries a heavy load: thousands of pages of rules, constant regulatory change, and deadlines that can't be missed. Most of that burden falls on small teams who would rather be building products and serving customers. Our founder learned this first-hand scaling an FCA-regulated insurer to 100+ staff and 200,000+ policies. Goodley exists to fix it.

We're building an AI-powered compliance operating system. It works out which obligations apply to a firm, translates them into what they mean in practice, and turns them into clear, actionable workflows, so teams can get back to what they do best.

Why this is one of the best places to build with AI right now

Compliance is close to a perfect problem for AI. It involves huge volumes of dense, interlinked text, judgement-heavy interpretation, and high stakes for getting it right. That calls for more than a chatbot wrapper. You'll work hands-on across the modern AI stack, including retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), embeddings, decision models and agent orchestration. You'll use them to build systems that read, reason over and map regulation into structured, trustworthy outputs that real firms rely on. If you want to push modern AI to its limits on a problem that genuinely needs it, this is that opportunity.

Where we are

We're fully funded and have started onboarding our first customers, who have met us with real enthusiasm. The product is live, the demand is real, and now we need to scale it. We're deliberately building a small, extremely talent-dense team, where every person shapes the company.

What you'll do

  • Design, build and own core product features across the stack, from AI agent pipelines to the interfaces customers use every day
  • Architect systems that are scalable, secure and reliable enough for regulated firms to trust
  • Work directly with the founder and our compliance lead to turn regulatory complexity and customer feedback into product, and ship fast
  • Make the key technology choices and set the engineering standards, tooling and culture we'll grow on
  • Help shape Goodley's long-term technical and platform strategy

Who you are

  • Ambitious and early in your career, with around 2-5 years of professional engineering experience. You're looking for the big opportunity to prove what you can do, and you want your work to define a company.
  • A strong full-stack engineer with modern languages and frameworks (e.g. TypeScript, Python, Node.js, React)
  • Hands-on with LLMs and AI tooling, or hungry to go deep on them. You're excited by what's now possible, not just curious about it
  • Experienced with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP or Azure), databases and CI/CD
  • Security-minded: authentication, authorisation and data protection come naturally to you
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and ownership. You've thrived in an early-stage startup or a small, fast-moving team, or you're ready to
  • A clear communicator who enjoys working with non-technical colleagues and customers
  • Experience in fintech, insurtech or other regulated industries is a bonus, but not a requirement

What we offer

  • A genuine founding role with significant ownership and influence
  • Meaningful equity through our EMI share option scheme
  • Remote-first working with a small team that moves quickly and cares about craft

If you want a hard problem, a fast pace and the chance to build something firms actually depend on, we'd love to hear from you.
