Overview

As Senior HPC Hardware Engineer, you will lead the design, deployment, and ongoing improvement of our HPC infrastructure across the UK Data Centre. You will ensure reliability, performance, and scalability of mission-critical platforms while guiding hardware lifecycle management. You’ll work across compute, GPU, storage, networking, and data centre layers, delivering world-class HPC solutions. This role offers technical leadership within a team that powers Viridien’s scientific workloads and energy-transition initiatives. You’ll help shape scalable, secure infrastructure in a fast-paced, collaborative environment with a clear sustainability focus.

Responsibilities
  • Lead installation, maintenance, and lifecycle management of HPC server infrastructure (CPU and GPU)
  • Install, upgrade, and replace components (processors, GPUs, storage, networking, system hardware)
  • Perform firmware, BIOS, and hardware compatibility updates to maintain stability
  • Support hardware deployments, decommissioning, and lifecycle planning
  • Manage enterprise storage platforms (SAN, NAS, DAS) and monitor performance
  • Coordinate hardware maintenance, spare parts, warranty, and lease management
  • Support data centre standards, rack layouts, cabling, audits, and procedures
  • Lead complex hardware troubleshooting and incident resolution
  • Support change management, problem management, and continuous service improvement
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation and procedures
  • Participate in infrastructure projects, deployments, and on-call rota
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance
Key requirements
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or related discipline
  • Strong experience supporting enterprise HPC infrastructure (compute, storage, data centre)
  • Strong Linux administration experience
  • Experience diagnosing and resolving complex hardware and infrastructure issues
  • Knowledge of HPC system architecture and enterprise server platforms
  • Experience with infrastructure monitoring tools such as Zabbix
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to provide technical leadership and mentor others
