Infrastructure Engineer
Information Security Management System
Build and maintain the infrastructure that runs our platform, on a small, high-ownership team where you'll be trusted with real responsibility early, including independently handling live production issues.
Help us scale smarter, faster, and with purpose
Since 2005, we’ve helped organisations achieve their goals through simple, sustainable, and scalable information security. What started as a solution to help UK police forces share sensitive data securely has grown into a global SaaS platform, IO – trusted by thousands of businesses worldwide.
We’re growing fast. Backed by private equity investment and with customers across the UK, Europe, the US, and APAC, we’re expanding our team and doubling down on our mission: to set the standard for information security management and deliver compliance confidence through our exceptional people, process, and platform.
That’s where you come in.
About the role
We’re looking for a capable infrastructure engineer to join our fast-growing, entrepreneurial business. We’re looking for people who can help us take IO to the next level and develop with us along the way.
You will be responsible for building and maintaining the infrastructure that runs our platform, as well as related applications and services — on a small, high-ownership team where you’ll be trusted with real responsibility early, including independently handling live production issues.
IO’s product is trust: we help businesses achieve ISO 27001, SOC 2, GDPR and other certifications. That means our own infrastructure must model the standards we sell — security and availability come before speed or convenience, always.
This role is remote with the possibility to be on-site if you live near our offices in Brighton or Southampton. As part of the role, being available for an on-call rota will be required.
What you’ll be doing
- Develop and apply changes to our production infrastructure using modern cloud tools and technologies, as the business — and our infrastructure — continues to scale
- Perform ongoing maintenance and system administration of the platform
- Ensure infrastructure complies with our internal security policies and the standards our product is built to support
- Ensure SLAs are met and business continuity practices are maintained
- Participate in an on-call rotation, including independently diagnosing and resolving live production incidents — at times, you’ll be the only infrastructure engineer available
- Create and maintain infrastructure documentation
- Assist in maintaining and expanding the tooling used by the wider organisation (scripts, etc.)
- Work across a mix of modern and legacy components of our stack with the eventual goal of modernisation in mind — we’ve grown from an established codebase spanning 10+ years, so adaptability across old and new is part of the job
- Progress toward independent production access based on demonstrated readiness — we’ll work with you to get there.
What you bring
- A big-picture view of overarching architecture and technologies
- A genuine security and least-privilege mindset — built into how you think about infrastructure, not bolted on afterward
- Strong attention to detail
- A good feel for when deeper investigation is required, and the discipline to pursue issues methodically until they’re properly understood and resolved — not just patched
- Experience having built and maintained business-critical infrastructure
- Comfort working across a mix of modern and legacy tooling, adapting your approach accordingly
- Genuine curiosity, and the judgement to know when something needs a second pair of eyes — we’d rather you ask a good question than guess confidently
- Willingness and ability to be the sole infrastructure engineer at times, including handling live incidents independently
- Ability to work as a team and offer support when needed, as well as having initiative and confidence to manage projects end-to-end
- Comfortable driving research and presenting findings to the team through demos and knowledge sharing
Must-haves
- Solid, hands-on experience building and running production systems in AWS, through infrastructure as code (Terraform preferred) — you understand state, module design, and why drift matters, not just terraform apply
- Experience of managing infrastructure around full stack applications in a cloud environment and the core services surrounding them
- Solid experience developing and running a production Kubernetes cluster — you’re not learning Kubernetes on the job
- Experience developing and deploying custom Helm charts
- Working knowledge of Git in a team environment (branching, PR hygiene, code review practices)
- Demonstrable experience troubleshooting and conducting root cause analysis on production issues — calm, structured and methodical under pressure, not just familiarity with the concept
- Comfort with observability tooling (e.g. New Relic, CloudWatch, or equivalent) to diagnose issues rather than working blind
- Experience of managing infrastructure projects from proposal through to production.
Nice to haves
- Scripting (Bash or Python preferred)
- Experience with EKS
- Relational database administration (preferably MySQL)
- Disaster recovery techniques and their implementation
- Experience of AI hosting
- Certification in AWS or Kubernetes
- Familiarity with ISO 27001 or other security/compliance standards
- Experience with Ruby on Rails
- Experience in a regulated or compliance-driven environment
Why you’ll love it here
- A fast-growing business where you’ll be trusted with real ownership from early on
- A small team that values judgement, security-first thinking, and getting things right over getting things fast
- A product that solves meaningful problems and gets real results for customers
- A supportive environment where you’ll be trusted to lead and encouraged to grow — with honest, direct feedback along the way
