The Role:

The IT Infrastructure Engineer is a suitably qualified and experienced person (SQEP) responsible for the detailed design, build, testing, and delivery of system components within the scope of their responsibility. This scope, along with relevant Requirements will be provided by the Lead Solution Architect. Fulfilment criteria, along with testing evidence required, will be agreed with the Lead Solution Architect, Systems Engineer, Service Architect and Lead Security Architect. They will work in close collaboration with the Lead Solution Architect and other delivery and service stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Build

  • Design infrastructure solutions (hardware, software, network, platform) that meet functional and non‑functional requirements defined by the Lead Solution Architect.
  • Build and configure infrastructure components in accordance with agreed design standards and security/compliance requirements.
  • Document the solution using a range of methods that include key design decisions, architectural rationale and build & configuration artefacts in order to deliver a Low‑Level Design (LLD).
  • Integration with other relevant subsystems and components across the technical solution.

Security

  • In collaboration with the Lead Security Architect and Lead Solution Architect, define security control implementation based upon the risk assessment and control recommendations.
  • Service Management
  • In collaboration with the Service Architect, determine, document and undertake the transition for the as‑is to the to‑be solution within their scope of responsibility and create relevant service artefacts as agreed with the Service Architect and Lead Solution Architect.

Testing

  • In collaboration with the Systems Engineer, define and undertake testing to demonstrate fulfilment of requirements including Functional, Service, Security, Performance, reliability and availability requirements. Support User Acceptance Testing as needed.
  • It should be noted that a Low-Level Design (LLD) is considered a detailed 'design and configuration' artefact that enables the build of a solution component and assists other suitably qualified and experienced persons (SQEP) familiar with the relevant technology to understand what the function of a component is, how it has been built and what is its configuration. It should provide suitable context to the SQEP reader on key design decisions made during the design.

It can take several forms including:

  • A textual document that details the design intention and configuration in a narrative form; a script or computer code that creates the required solution component.
  • A solution component creation method via other automated means including the use of Computer Aided Design, model‑based instantiations or Artificial Intelligence which may result in a non‑human readable delivery artefact, or one where specialist skills or tools are needed to interpret the artefact.
  • A pre‑configured solution component provided by a third‑party with relevant installation instructions including 'appliances'; artefacts reused or repurposed from other appropriate sources.

Stakeholder Engagement

Collaborate with:

Project Management to define deliverables and delivery timescales, assist in planning activities, manage Risk, Assumptions, Issues and Dependencies and Opportunities and support Change activities as required.

  • Lead Solution Architect to identify scope of responsibility, relevant requirements and detailed deliverables and to ensure solution alignment with system‑level architecture and programme requirements.
  • Systems Engineer to define testable acceptance criteria for infrastructure components.
  • Service Architect to ensure designed solutions are supportable, align with service management principles (e.g. ITIL) and create service artefacts including knowledgebase articles and operation guides as needed.
  • Lead Security Architect to ensure that the security controls derived from the system risk assessment are agreed, included in the component design and build, well defined and testable.

Delivery Support

  • Define and maintain the Bill of Materials (BoM) for infrastructure components within their scope of responsibility, including hardware, software licenses, and support requirements.
  • Create low‑level design documentation detailing component configuration, interdependencies, and deployment.
  • Produce operational handover documentation for the service organisation.

Skills & Experience

Required

  • Experience of infrastructure delivery projects which are unconnected to corporate systems or the internet.
  • Strong understanding of security controls and system hardening approaches for secure system delivery.
  • Demonstrable ability to deliver infrastructure solutions in complex, multi‑stakeholder environments.
  • Strong understanding of system and service management practices and tooling.
  • Experience producing clear, structured, and technically accurate design documentation.
  • Knowledge of testing approaches and test planning from an infrastructure perspective.
  • Familiarity with security frameworks and compliance standards, notably NIST (SP)800-53, CIS benchmarking and STIGs.
  • Exposure to enterprise architecture and service transition processes.

Scope of technical delivery

The Project will require expertise across its delivery team in the following technologies:

  • Management of physical hardware incl. Intel Servers, storage systems, network routers, firewalls and switches, backup devices.
  • Networks – traditional (switches, routers, VLANs) and SDN (NSX), 802.1x.
  • Server and Storage Virtualisation (VMware vSphere / VCF & vSAN).
  • Windows Server Build and Role configuration (e.g., AD, file services, Network Policy (RADIUS) server, Application Server) .
  • Windows client Build and Configuration (Windows 11, MECM).
  • Active Directory Domain Services and 2 factor authentication .
  • Windows‑based PKI.
  • Endpoint security software including Microsoft Defender and Trellix / McAfee
  • Microsoft SCCM / MECM and WSUS for Windows Image deliver, software delivery and patching.
  • System Monitoring using SCOM.
  • Boldon James File Classifier.
  • Databases – Oracle (for customer apps) , MS SQL Server (for MECM / SCOM).
  • Backup and Recovery using EMC Data Domain, Tape Vaults and Dell Networker / VEEAM backup and restore software.
  • Power Management using UPS and PowerChute software.
  • Transition Design (migrating from the as‑is system to the new system).
