(INT) Lead Infrastructure Operations Engineer

Natural Resources Wales (Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru)

Cardiff · Wales · United Kingdom

The role

Natural Resources Wales is looking for an experienced Lead Infrastructure Operations Engineer to play a key role in ensuring that our critical ICT services are secure, resilient, well managed and continually improved.

This is a senior operational technology role within our Digital, Data and Technology function. You will be responsible for leading the operation, support and maintenance of physical and virtual infrastructure services, ensuring they meet business needs, security requirements, service standards and agreed performance levels. The role includes support for business-critical services, including participation in out-of-hours arrangements where required.

Working closely with support teams, service owners, project teams and suppliers, you will provide technical leadership across live service operations. You will help manage priorities, workloads, service quality and technical capability, ensuring that incidents, problems, risks and service issues are responded to effectively and that root causes are understood and addressed.

You will play an important role in supporting change and service transition, ensuring that infrastructure requirements, support models, resilience, operational readiness and ongoing support arrangements are considered early in projects and programmes. You will also contribute to operational roadmaps and continual service improvement, using service data, monitoring tools and stakeholder feedback to identify risks, inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement.

The role involves working across a modern Microsoft-focused technology landscape, including Azure, Azure Virtual Desktop, Microsoft 365, Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft Defender, monitoring platforms and automation tools such as PowerShell. You will help ensure services are securely configured, well documented, effectively monitored and managed in line with organisational standards and ITIL service management practices.

You will also manage third-party support and supplier activity in relevant areas, ensuring services meet contractual obligations, regulatory requirements and NRW expectations. This includes managing delegated operational budgets and supplier spend, forecasting and monitoring expenditure, and ensuring value for money.

You will be part of a skilled infrastructure operations team, providing day-to-day technical leadership and management of engineers and other technical specialists. While the role is strongly focused on live service operation, it also carries significant influence across projects, suppliers and service improvement activity, helping to shape stable, secure and effective technology services for NRW.
