Overview
In this remote UK role, you own and evolve messaging interfaces between customers’ clinical systems and a cloud-hosted EMS. You’ll work in a small development team, driving engineering best practices and feature delivery that supports NHS and private healthcare integrations. You will shape technical strategy, mentor peers, and help ensure robust, secure, and scalable interfaces. This position offers meaningful impact in healthcare tech with autonomy to influence products and processes.

- Maintain the current Java-based interface stack (Java, Apache Camel, Spring Boot) in Docker
- Deliver ad-hoc integration projects with customers and third-party specialists
- Develop new interfaces to support messaging with external partners
- Enhance and maintain in-house interfaces
- Contribute to technical strategy and healthcare messaging best practices
- Produce clean, high-quality code and follow industry standards
- Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve production issues
- Deploy changes through structured change control
- Research and implement ongoing improvements
- Provide technical assistance to customers integrating with the EMS
- Monitor interface operations and respond to alerts
- Support the service desk by resolving tickets
- Create and maintain technical documentation
- Collaborate in an agile team and mentor colleagues through code reviews and pair programming
- Keep up-to-date with emerging technologies and assess value for the product
- Experience with healthcare messaging and integration
- HL7 v2.x and HL7 FHIR knowledge
- Familiarity with NHS-standard integration engines (InterSystems Ensemble/HealthShare, Orion Rhapsody, CloverLeaf, BizTalk, NextGen Mirth Connect/BridgeLink) is highly desirable
- Strong Java development experience including Maven, Spring Boot and Apache Camel
- Solid grounding in TDD or other testing methodologies
- Git experience and CI systems such as Azure DevOps
- Experience in containerised environments (Docker & Kubernetes)
- Configuration as Code and GitOps deployment familiarity
- Awareness of security practices including mTLS and SSH
- Some JavaScript/ECMAScript knowledge
- Familiarity with Enterprise Integration Patterns (EIP)
- Experience developing HTTP-based protocols (REST/SOAP) and structured message formats
- Collaborative, self-organised approach with a focus on problem-solving in healthcare
- Health tech experience is a bonus
