Overview

As Infrastructure Engineer, you will support and enhance Saab UK's core IT infrastructure, spanning on-prem VMware, backup, servers, networks, wireless, and cloud services. You will help keep infrastructure secure, reliable, and well-documented across on-premises and Azure-based environments. Based in Fareham with some travel, you’ll work with cross-location teams to maintain resilient IT services and enable platform improvements. This is a hands-on role shaping our core technology backbone in a defence-focused organisation.

Responsibilities
  • Provide day-to-day operational support for on-premises VMware environments (VMs, hosts, clusters, storage, management platforms)
  • Monitor and maintain servers, storage, network, wireless, cloud, and infrastructure services for availability, performance, resilience and security
  • Assist with administration of Microsoft Azure services (VMs, storage, networking, identity, monitoring, backup)
  • Administer and support backup and recovery services, monitor jobs, investigate failures, assist with restores and routine recovery testing
  • Provide technical support for LAN, WAN, switching, routing, firewalls, VPN, wireless, and Azure networking
  • Support Microsoft 365 services (Exchange Online, Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint Online) within role scope
  • Administer and support SharePoint sites, permissions and document libraries
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve infrastructure incidents and service requests per SLAs
  • Maintain infrastructure documentation, asset records, configuration data, procedures, and knowledge articles
  • Support patching, upgrades, lifecycle management, change activity, and small-scale projects across on-premises and cloud environments
  • Liaise with third-party vendors and internal stakeholders to resolve issues and drive service improvement
  • Comply with IT policies, change control, security standards, and procedures
Key requirements
  • Experience supporting VMware virtualization platforms in on-premise infrastructure
  • Proficient with Windows Server, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy and related services
  • Experience with backup, recovery and disaster recovery processes
  • Understanding of networking (VLANs, routing, switching, firewalls, VPN, wireless, cloud networking)
  • Experience administering or supporting Microsoft 365 services (SharePoint Online, Teams, OneDrive, Exchange Online)
  • Awareness or practical experience of Microsoft Azure services (VMs, storage, networking, identity, monitoring, backup)
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve technical incidents using structured troubleshooting
  • Strong written and verbal communication for clear technical documentation
