Overview

As Lead Data Engineer, you will blend hands-on data engineering with technical leadership to drive reliable, high-quality data products. You’ll mentor data engineers, promote DevOps ownership, and uphold engineering standards across multiple squads. Your collaboration with Product Managers, Data Analysts and Architects will translate business needs into scalable, performant solutions. You’ll champion best practices, contribute to agile communities, and help shape a data–driven strategy for the client. This role hands you the opportunity to influence data architecture choices and accelerate data maturity in a hybrid Leeds setup.

Responsibilities
  • Provide technical mentorship and direction to data engineers to raise capability and career growth
  • Foster a DevOps culture with ownership across the engineering organisation
  • Lead data engineering best practices, code reviews, and development activities
  • Ensure data quality and integrity across data products
  • Work with structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data including real-time and batch latency
  • Ensure solutions align with architectural frameworks defined by Data Architects
  • Collaborate with Product Managers and Data Analysts to translate requirements into scalable data solutions
  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies to enhance capabilities
  • Balance hands-on engineering with technical leadership to deliver high-quality results
Key requirements
  • Proven experience building and maintaining high-quality, secure data solutions
  • Experience operating scalable, high-performance applications in production
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Azure tooling (Azure Databricks preferred)
  • Strong data modelling and architectures (data vaults, data warehouses, data lakes)
  • Experience with Azure Data Factory
  • Extensive experience with Python, SQL and PySpark
  • Version control with GitHub
  • Experience with Agile frameworks (Scrum, Kanban, Lean)
  • Excellent communication skills to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
  • Demonstrated experience leading and mentoring data engineers
