Overview

In this role you lead the data acquisition function for Shell Energy Trading & Supply, owning ingestion strategy and Azure pipelines to deliver trustworthy data for trading, risk, finance and operations. You’ll guide end-user needs into engineered solutions as the domain’s data manager, while developing a high-performing data engineering team. Expect work across Azure data platforms, data governance, and scalable data ingestion to enable fast, compliant decision-making. This role offers impact on critical energy trading data ecosystems and collaboration with cross-functional partners.

Responsibilities
  • Own the ingestion strategy and build high-quality pipelines on Azure
  • Define target-state batch/streaming ingestion patterns and standardize connectors, schemas and controls
  • Lead design and build on Azure data platforms (ADLS, ADF, Databricks, Synapse, Event Hubs/Kafka) with CI/CD, IaC and automated testing
  • Industrialize onboarding of data sources (ETRM/Endur, Trayport, market data vendors, SAP, SCADA/IoT) with SLAs and observability
  • Translate trading desk, risk, operations and finance requirements into a prioritized data acquisition backlog
  • Collaborate with Product Owners and Solution/Data Architects to align designs and mastership decisions
  • Steward data definitions, lineage, metadata, quality KPIs and access policies; chair data change forums
  • Apply data lifecycle practices and maintain audit trails and records management
  • Lead and develop a team of Data Engineers; coach on coding standards and production operations
  • Shape capacity plans, skills roadmap and vendor contributions; promote safety, compliance and continuous improvement
  • Ensure resilience, cyber hygiene, data privacy, regulatory obligations (e.g., REMIT/EMIR) and service health measurement
  • Drive incident, change and problem management and report on user satisfaction
Key requirements
  • Extensive experience in data engineering with leadership in complex, real‑time data environments
  • Expertise in Azure data services (ADLS, ADF, Databricks, Synapse, Event Hub/Kafka)
  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, Spark/PySpark
  • Strong knowledge of streaming/batch patterns, schema management, CDC and API integration
  • Experience with data modelling, metadata and lineage tooling; performance and cost optimization
  • Proven leadership in engineering teams; Agile/DevOps, CI/CD and test automation
  • Preferred exposure to energy trading systems (ETRM/Endur), market data (ICE, Platts, Bloomberg) and SAP
  • Degree in Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent experience; Azure Data Engineer or Databricks certifications a plus
