Machine Learning Engineer — Wawanesa Insurance

Work arrangement: Hybrid, with two days per week or 15 hours per week in a Wawanesa office. Available locations include Winnipeg, Wawanesa, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge, North York, Kitchener, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City, Moncton, and Dartmouth.

Salary: $110,000–$130,000 per year. The role is eligible for benefits and other offerings described by the employer.

About the role

Join the Advanced Analytics Exploration team to develop and deploy predictive models that support enterprise decision-making. The role uses structured and unstructured data, statistical analysis, visualization, machine learning, and large language models to address business problems and communicate findings to technical and business audiences.

Responsibilities

• Translate business and functional needs into scalable machine learning and AI workflows.
• Conduct exploratory analysis and deliver insights to business units and senior leadership.
• Collaborate with Machine Learning Operations and Technology teams to implement production-ready workflows.
• Research machine learning and AI tools, algorithms, and techniques, and implement suitable approaches.
• Follow data security, model governance, and performance standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in software engineering, data science, computer science, or a related quantitative field, or equivalent work experience; an advanced degree is preferred.
• Knowledge of probability, statistical models, machine learning algorithms, and large language models.
• Strong Python and SQL programming skills; experience with code reproducibility and version control.
• Databricks, AWS, and Power BI experience are assets.
• Ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and collaborate across technical, actuarial, analytical, and operations teams.
