Mobile Architect - Outside IR35

In this hybrid, outside-IR35 role, you will lead the architecture of large mobile systems with strong iOS focus. You’ll reconstruct existing architectures from code and artefacts, define quality attributes, and assess systems against them. You’ll work with cross-functional teams to shape scalable mobile solutions, including encryption, security, and integration with core banking backends. This engagement emphasizes rapid initial delivery, clear documentation, and evidence-led conclusions.

• Reconstruct and articulate architecture for large existing mobile systems from code and artefacts
• Define architecture characteristics and quality attributes and assess systems against them
• Lead iOS-centric design with Android review input; ensure consistency across platforms
• Oversee modularisation at scale (SPM, Xcode workspaces, Tuist/XcodeGen, XCFrameworks) and manage boundaries/dependencies
• Evaluate and select appropriate architectural patterns (MVVM, VIPER, TCA, Clean) and map them to codebases
• Understand build, signing, distribution, profiling, and performance considerations for mobile apps
• Review and challenge backend/mobile integration patterns (REST/GraphQL/gRPC, API gateway, BFF)
• Assess identity and authorisation workflows (OAuth 2.0, OIDC, token lifecycle) and banking-specific security
• Engage with CTO-level stakeholders, communicate findings clearly, and support fixed-price scoping and governance
• Deliver defensible first-cut architecture by week 2 and refine through discussions
• Familiarity with cross-platform considerations (Kotlin Multiplatform, React Native, webview) is a plus
• Nice-to-have: prior mobile platform modernisation or re-platforming initiatives in regulated environments

• iOS depth with Swift, UIKit and SwiftUI in large production apps
• Android knowledge sufficient to review docs and assessments

• Backend/mobile integration patterns and API ecosystem understanding
