Overview
In this role you drive the redesign and remediation of the university's main campus network in Cambridge. You work with existing network and infrastructure teams to enhance stability, resilience, and standardisation of configurations. You will implement and validate changes, troubleshoot complex L2/L3 issues, and document high‑level and low‑level designs. The role combines hands-on Cisco routing/switching with wireless (Aruba) knowledge in a structured change-control environment.
Responsibilities- Review and optimise campus network topology and configurations
- Remediate legacy, redundant or obsolete configurations
- Support network redesign and logical simplification
- Configure and troubleshoot Cisco routers and switches
- Troubleshoot complex L2/L3 connectivity and routing issues
- Review/remediate VLANs, SVIs, trunks, port channels, and routing configurations
- Assist migration from legacy to target designs
- Identify and remove unused VLANs, interfaces, static routes, ACLs, prefix lists, route maps
- Support Cisco wireless environments and basic Aruba issues
- Prepare and implement controlled production changes with MOPs and rollback procedures
- Complete pre-/post-change testing and documentation
- Produce accurate HLD/LLD, topology, routing and operations docs
- Collaborate with internal teams while retaining ability to work independently
- Plan and participate in planned evening/weekend maintenance windows
- Adhere to formal change-control processes
- CCNA or demonstrable equivalent Cisco networking experience
- Strong Cisco routing and switching background
- Practical OSPF and working BGP experience
- Enterprise campus network experience
- Strong network troubleshooting skills
- Experience cleaning up and standardising legacy configurations
- Cisco wireless knowledge and Aruba networking/wireless experience
- Experience working under formal change-control processes
- Strong technical documentation skills
- Ability to work onsite in Cambridge
