PHP / Laravel Developer

Location: Hadleigh, Essex – Hybrid (2 days office / 3 days home)

We’re looking for a PHP / Laravel Developer to join a small, established development team supporting a growing organisation.

This is a great opportunity for someone with around 2+ years of commercial development experience who has strong PHP fundamentals and hands‑on experience with Laravel or Symfony. You don’t need to be a highly senior developer, but you should be comfortable working on production applications, picking up existing codebases and contributing without significant hand‑holding.

The development team is increasingly embracing AI‑assisted software development, with Claude Code and Anthropic models being used throughout the development process. We’re therefore particularly interested in developers who are comfortable using AI coding tools to improve productivity while still being able to understand, review and challenge the code being produced.

What you’ll be doing

• Developing and maintaining web applications using PHP and Laravel
• Building new functionality and improving existing applications
• Developing and consuming RESTful APIs
• Working across backend development and frontend features
• Working with JavaScript, HTML and CSS
• Using MySQL and relational databases
• Working within Linux‑based development environments
• Using Git/GitHub for version control
• Using Claude Code and other AI‑assisted development tools as part of your workflow
• Reviewing and adapting AI‑generated code
• Writing clean, maintainable and secure production code
• Identifying and addressing common web application security vulnerabilities
• Collaborating closely with other developers and stakeholders to deliver new features

What we’re looking for

You should have around 2+ years of commercial software development experience, including:

• Strong commercial PHP experience
• Experience with Laravel and/or Symfony
• JavaScript, HTML and CSS
• MySQL or similar relational databases
• RESTful API development and integration
• Git/GitHub
• Understanding of secure web development practices
• Awareness of OWASP and common web application vulnerabilities
• Ability to understand and work effectively within an existing codebase

Experience with Claude Code, Anthropic or other AI coding assistants would be highly desirable. Experience with Bootstrap, Tailwind and Linux environments would also be beneficial.

The opportunity

This position would suit a developer who has moved beyond junior level and can contribute independently but still wants the opportunity to develop alongside an experienced team.

You’ll be joining a stable development environment with experienced engineers and will have the opportunity to work with modern AI development tools as they become increasingly integrated into the software development lifecycle.

The role offers hybrid working, with two days per week in the Hadleigh office and three days working from home.
