Overview

As a Platform Engineer at Nominet, you will operate, maintain and enhance private cloud platforms spanning data centres and edge sites, supporting critical UK internet infrastructure. You’ll balance operations with project work, building automation and deployment pipelines to keep platforms secure, reliable and scalable. You’ll collaborate across engineering teams to evolve our Platform-as-a-Service offering and strengthen resilience. This role offers real impact within a mission-driven tech organisation.

Responsibilities
  • Operate and improve private cloud infrastructure across datacentres and edge locations (compute, storage, Linux, virtualization, Kubernetes)
  • Maintain network services including routing, switching, external peering, transit, BGP and inter-datacentre links
  • Manage platform lifecycle: patching, upgrades, capacity planning, performance optimisation, hardware support and proactive maintenance
  • Automate provisioning, configuration and operational workflows using Ansible, Terraform, Packer and GitOps
  • Monitor platform health, manage backups, troubleshoot complex issues and handle incidents and on-call duties
  • Collaborate with technical teams to strengthen security, resilience and availability and evolve the Platform-as-a-Service offering
Key requirements
  • Hands-on experience operating complex infrastructure across networking, Linux, compute, storage, virtualization and containers
  • Strong troubleshooting and incident-response skills with ownership mindset
  • Experience with automation/infrastructure-as-code tools such as Ansible, Terraform, Packer
  • Good networking knowledge including routing and switching and high-availability design understanding
  • Willingness to participate in an out-of-hours on-call rota
