Platform Engineer

About the Role

This role sits within IT Services as part of the AI & Automation (AAA) Programme, which is embedding AI and automation into how Queen Mary University of Londonoperates. The AAA team delivers a portfolio of projects covering user-facing AI agents, integrations across university systems and new microservices that automate and improve day-to-day university processes.

About You

The Platform Engineer is an experienced engineer responsible for building,operatingand improving a new shared Kubernetes platform AAAoperatesto deliver services across the university, with operational rigour and engineering standards a core part of day-to-day work. The postholder will own the operability of the environment that application,AIand integration engineers ship their services onto.

This is a hands-on platform engineering role. The postholder will build and run that platform, with day-to-day work spanning infrastructure as code, Kubernetes operations, networking, CI/CD,observabilityand event streaming. Production operations are a core part of the role, including on-call cover, incident response and ongoing work on reliability,securityand capacity. The application, AI and integration engineers shipping onto the platform are its users, and the roleis responsible forkeeping their experience reliable and straightforward.

The postholder will hold a Bachelors Degree and/or equivalent experience

About the Department

The Platform Engineer will join a small, high-impact engineering team within IT Services, working closely with the Head of Engineering and the architecture team to set and uphold platform engineering standards as the platform evolves. The role reports to the Programme Director for AI Automation, Apps and Strategy.
