Overview

As Principal Automation Engineer, you will lead and coordinate automation activities for a long-standing oil & gas contract, ensuring safety, technical and schedule commitments while enabling seamless system integration. You will manage multiple automation projects, from upgrades to new installations, and oversee FEED, design reviews, and commissioning activities. You will partner with clients, EPCs and vendors to deliver reliable control solutions that support safe plant operations. This role offers a-impact in advancing automation capabilities within a sustainable energy portfolio.

Responsibilities
  • Lead delivery and performance of automation projects (upgrades, migrations, new installs)
  • Oversee concurrent projects (e.g., Honeywell DCS and FSC to Safety Manager migration; PLC replacements)
  • Site surveying to identify cutover methods for outages
  • Develop project estimates (manhours, materials) with automation & C&I engineers support
  • Lead FEED process and deliverable structure; oversee testing and cutover strategy
  • Prioritize activities based on business needs and resources
  • Review/approve DCS/PLC proposals with vendors/integrators
  • Review/approve EC&I and OEM design documentation
  • Lead multi-disciplinary design reviews with Client, EPC and OEM SMEs
  • Create and maintain project schedules and resource plans
  • Provide progress reporting to portfolio management
  • Develop Control Narratives from P&IDs and procedures
  • Develop FAT, SAT and plant commissioning procedures
  • Coordinate site commissioning activities
Key requirements
  • Extensive industry experience in oil & gas, process, utilities or pharmaceutical
  • Brownfield experience essential
  • Strong knowledge of DCS systems and SIS implementations in FEED, design and commissioning
  • Experience with various PLC platforms and their integration
  • Knowledge of electrical interfacing between automation systems and process actuators
  • Knowledge of hazardous area classifications and protection requirements (ATEX)
  • Knowledge of communications protocols (Profibus, Modbus, Ethernet/IP)
  • Client-focused project delivery
  • Self-motivated with independent and team work
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
