Overview

As a Principal AWS Cloud Engineer, you define and drive cloud strategy and architect resilient AWS-based solutions. You will provide technical direction across multiple engineering teams and act as the highest level of technical escalation. The role combines hands-on implementation with leadership, shaping best practices and enterprise-scale cloud delivery. You’ll work to optimize cost, performance, and security while mentoring engineers and aligning cloud initiatives with business goals. This is an opportunity to influence cloud governance and engineering standards within a defence-tech environment.

Responsibilities
  • Architect multi-region, highly available AWS environments aligned to business objectives
  • Develop and maintain complex Terraform-based IaC and manage AWS Control Tower/landing zone architectures
  • Contribute to codebase by building backend services, automation scripts, and tooling
  • Prototype and evaluate new AWS services and third-party technologies to enhance capability and time-to-market
  • Guide technical decision-making across engineering teams and ensure infra-software integration
  • Design and deploy enterprise-grade CI/CD pipelines and internal developer platforms
  • Drive AWS cost optimisation and performance improvements across distributed systems
  • Act as trusted advisor to engineering leadership on cloud strategy, governance, and standards
  • Mentor senior, mid-level, and junior engineers to foster continuous improvement and operational excellence
Key requirements
  • Extensive experience designing and operating AWS cloud infrastructure
  • Expert-level AWS knowledge, including networking (Transit Gateway, Direct Connect), compute, storage, security and governance
  • Strong Infrastructure as Code and configuration management experience
  • Software engineering background with Python, Go, Java or Node.js
  • Proven track record leading large-scale technical initiatives across multiple teams
  • Experience with large-scale distributed systems and microservices architectures
  • Strong stakeholder management and ability to drive technical consensus
