Overview

In this Principal Engineer role, you will lead design delivery for allocated engineering work, ensuring on-time, on-budget outcomes aligned with client specifications. You’ll develop feasibility studies, design concepts, and technical reports while improving internal standards and promoting engineering excellence. The position spans leadership within project teams, signing off design certificates, and guiding design quality and safety compliance. You’ll work across disciplines to deliver innovative, value-for-money solutions that shape transport projects.

Responsibilities
  • Produce and approve design concepts, drawings, specifications and technical documents
  • Establish internal design standards and continuous improvement
  • Work within project teams to meet objectives
  • Supervise others, check work, and sign off design certificates
  • Prepare and review feasibility studies, design reports, and tender documents
  • Implement innovative, value-for-money design solutions
  • Prepare and check engineering designs, calculations, and reports
  • Ensure health, safety and environmental compliance (CDM)
  • Manage project correspondence and act as Technical Directorate representative
  • Foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, and empowerment
Key requirements
  • Domain recognised systems integration/engineering qualifications (e.g., ASEP, CSEP, CPRE)
  • Experience of contract conditions, processes and procedures
  • Experience of line management
  • Knowledgeable on relevant design software
  • Relevant degree
  • Membership of a professional body (ICE, IET, IMechE)
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status
  • Ability to lead Requirements Engineering, System Design and System Architecting
  • Experience in system modelling, integration, verification and certification
