Overview

As Principal Engineer, you will shape architecture, engineering standards, and technical direction to deliver scalable, secure software and cloud-native solutions. You’ll lead from the front, guiding cross-functional teams to ship features, reduce technical debt, and improve customer outcomes. You’ll mentor engineers, promote modern practices, and drive continuous improvement across platforms. Your work will modernise legacy systems and scale solutions for IRIS’s growing customer base, collaborating with Product, Architecture, DevOps, Support and others.

Responsibilities
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership across software development teams
  • Lead design, development, and delivery of scalable, secure, high-performing software
  • Drive architectural decisions aligned with engineering best practices and business objectives
  • Contribute to estimation, planning, and technical decision-making for new initiatives
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support product releases and operational excellence
  • Ensure clear priorities, milestones, and delivery commitments
  • Engage in code reviews, troubleshooting, and resolving complex technical issues
  • Champion modern engineering practices including CI/CD, DevOps, automation, testing, and observability
  • Promote code quality, maintainability, security, and performance
  • Drive continuous improvement across development processes, tooling, and ways of working
  • Support evolution and modernization of existing platforms and systems
  • Coach and mentor engineers, supporting performance management and career development
  • Foster collaboration, knowledge sharing, and effective communication
  • Help build high-performing teams through engagement, accountability, and growth
Key requirements
  • Significant experience in software engineering with leadership of complex technical initiatives and distributed teams
  • Strong expertise with Microsoft stack including C#, .NET, SQL Server, Azure
  • Experience designing and delivering scalable, cloud-native applications and services
  • Solid understanding of microservices, distributed systems, and modern architecture principles
  • Ability to write, review, and guide production-grade, well-tested code
  • Experience across multiple programming languages and tech stacks
  • Deep understanding of software engineering best practices, lifecycles, and agile delivery
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder management skills
