Principal Engineer

As Principal Engineer at On the Beach, you will drive technical innovation at scale, shaping the platform that powers discovery, booking, and experiences for millions of travelers. You’ll define architectural direction, modernise legacy systems, and improve search capabilities to deliver fast, reliable experiences. You’ll mentor engineers, collaborate across product, data, and platform teams, and help execute the next phase of our technology strategy in a remote-first, growth-focused company.

• Define technical strategy and transformation roadmap with the VP of Product Engineering
• Lead design and optimisation of search systems for relevance and scalability
• Evolve and refactor C# codebases across the platform
• Champion best practices in security, performance, testing, and continuous delivery
• Provide architectural leadership across multiple teams with reusable patterns
• Mentor engineers to grow technical and leadership capabilities
• Collaborate with Product, Data, and Platform teams to deliver complex changes
• Lead transformation and modernisation initiatives balancing technical ambition with business priorities

• Experience shaping technical direction at scale
• Experience designing and optimising search technologies (Elasticsearch, Solr, OpenSearch, or similar)
• Knowledge of distributed systems, cloud-native architectures (AWS preferred), and modern web technologies
• Adept at leading teams through change and transformation
• Clear and confident communicator capable of translating complex concepts for diverse audiences
