Overview

In this Principal Engineer role, you shape technical direction across the Surveillance estate while remaining hands-on. You’ll balance deep technical work with guiding senior engineers, ensuring architecture coherence, security posture, and production reliability. You’ll mentor, review architecture and code, and participate in incidents to keep the platform resilient at scale across AWS and Azure. The role combines strategic influence with practical delivery to accelerate client onboarding, cost visibility, and safe change across the estate. This is a opportunity to raise engineering craft and help mature a high-impact, enterprise SaaS platform.

Responsibilities
  • Define and maintain architectural coherence across the Surveillance estate
  • Drive reliability, observability, and correct operational behavior including incident response and disaster recovery
  • Promote software craftsmanship and change safety through testing, reviews, and boring deployments
  • Shape security-focused engineering policies and end-to-end security architecture for client environments
  • Grow and empower senior engineers, expanding their scope and impact
  • Tackle cost and unit economics via collaboration with FinOps and product teams
  • Support enterprise client assurance by standardising environment segregation, promotion controls, and data residency
  • Engage with clients and stakeholders (e.g., CISOs) to articulate technical risk and architecture
  • Balance hands-on work (architecture review, coding, incidents) with strategic leadership
  • Ensure teams can move quickly and safely with clear ownership across the estate
Key requirements
  • Deep technical breadth with proven hands-on impact in complex systems
  • Experience leading senior engineers and driving design reviews
  • Ability to operate across architecture, code, incidents, and client conversations
  • Strong understanding of security as engineering controls, identity/workload isolation
  • Comfort working with enterprise clients and speaking to technical risk with executives
  • Experience with multi-cloud environments (AWS, Azure) and modern tech stack
  • Ability to reason about long-term architecture and evolve platforms over years
  • Strong leadership and mentoring
