Principal Engineer

As Principal Engineer you will lead the Highway Developments and Implementation team to ensure private developments are designed and delivered to high highway standards. You will act as a specialist adviser to developers and coordinate with councils and consultants to enable compliant, safe infrastructure delivery. The role involves mentoring engineers, reviewing submissions, negotiating with stakeholders, and promoting health and safety across projects. • Manage and develop a high-performing team of engineers and technicians
• Ensure highway works for developers conform to national and local standards
• Negotiate with developers, consultants and contractors to align schemes with standards and legal agreements
• Review developer submissions for compliance during the technical approval process
• Collaborate with council colleagues and stakeholders to plan and approve new developments
• Provide clear, professional responses to MPs, elected members, and the public
• Promote a strong health and safety culture and ensure policy compliance

• Degree-level qualification (or equivalent) + recognised professional qualification in civil engineering (Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer)
• NVQ Level 5 in Management or equivalent leadership experience
• Significant post-qualification experience delivering complex civil/ highways projects
• Proven ability to lead programmes, manage resources and budgets in a highways environment
• Strong influencing, negotiating and stakeholder relationship skills
• Clear communication skills with ability to translate technical content for diverse audiences
