Overview

As a Principal Software Engineer in the M&S Software Engineering team, you will shape the modernization of mission-critical systems powering warehouse operations. You’ll influence technology and product strategy while collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver core features at scale. This role focuses on engineering excellence, secure and reliable systems, and DevOps-driven delivery within a digital-first, engineering-led organization. You will mentor others, promote best practices, and help raise the MS Tech profile through open-source contributions and public content. Responsibilities
  • Set technical direction and launch core features or strategic programs
  • Drive technology and product investment decisions and team setup
  • Champion communities of practice and establish engineering excellence
  • Lead by example in the engineering ecosystem and promote clean code/architecture
  • Advance DevOps practices to automate the product lifecycle
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Technology, and Product leadership to align strategies
  • Mentor senior engineers across the landscape and foster innovation
  • Support recruitment, onboarding and brand outreach activities
  • Amplify engineering teams by providing direction and alignment across teams
  • Contribute to public content and open-source technology initiatives
  • Promote continuous industrialisation and product-minded tech capabilities
  • Inspire teams toward autonomy and maturity and raise MS Tech’s profile
Key requirements
  • Significant track record in strategic thinking and execution
  • Expert in clean code and design patterns
  • Strong information security knowledge with embedded controls
  • Proven ability to drive system design conversations for high-risk and complex systems
  • Experience leading process optimisation and team development
  • Proficiency with prototyping methods and mentoring others
  • Influence across senior levels and from technical to non-technical stakeholders
  • Authoritative cloud computing and automation skills (network, security, serverless, Kubernetes)
  • Experience implementing Observability and Reliability (e.g., New Relic)
  • Strong performance engineering and reliability testing experience
  • Excellent communication and leadership mindset
