Overview

As Principal Software Engineer at M&S, you will provide senior technical leadership across the International Fashion, Home & Beauty domain. You’ll shape mission-critical platforms to enable international growth and digital-first experiences, working with cross-functional teams to design scalable, secure, and reusable solutions. You’ll set technical direction, raise engineering standards, and lead platforms spanning product, price, availability, partner integrations, and logistics. This is a high-impact role at a well-loved British brand driving transformation across stores and digital channels.

Responsibilities
  • Lead technical excellence across the full software development lifecycle, from design to live operation of core features and platforms.
  • Define scalable integration patterns for product, price/availability flows, fulfilment, partner onboarding, marketplace integrations and market-specific experiences.
  • Shape technical direction and influence investment decisions, team structures and delivery approaches.
  • Champion engineering excellence via clean code, architecture, automation, and DevOps practices.
  • Drive 'you build it, you run it' ownership for services, enabling teams to release and continuously improve.
  • Provide technical leadership to internal teams and external partners across multi-team delivery environments.
  • Build engineering capability through mentoring, Communities of Practice, recruitment support, onboarding, and wider community contributions.
Key requirements
  • Significant experience providing technical leadership across complex software environments.
  • Strong fundamentals in software engineering, clean code, clean architecture, design patterns, distributed systems.
  • Experience shaping technology strategy and ensuring alignment with business objectives and architectural direction.
  • Deep knowledge of cloud/platform engineering, including cloud-native architectures, Kubernetes, security, observability, reliability and automation.
  • Understanding of quality engineering, test strategies, CI/CD, and DevOps ownership models.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management and influencing skills for senior audiences.
  • Strong leadership with ownership mindset, coaching capability, and ability to guide decisions without over-prescribing solutions.
