As a Principal Software Engineer in M&S’s Software Engineering team, you drive technical excellence across the full lifecycle to modernise mission-critical systems powering warehouse operations. You will shape the technical direction, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and promote best practices to build robust, scalable platforms that serve millions of customers and thousands of colleagues. This role offers the chance to lead architecture decisions, champion DevOps and automation, and contribute to an engineering-led, digital-first transformation at a renowned retail brand.

Responsibilities
  • Lead technical excellence across the full SDLC from design to launch and continuous improvement of strategic products and platforms
  • Define and influence technical direction, engineering strategy and technology investments with Engineering, Technology and Product leaders
  • Champion engineering excellence through clean code, clean architecture, DevOps, automation and operational excellence
  • Mentor and develop engineers, support Communities of Practice, foster innovation, autonomy and continuous learning
  • Strengthen the engineering organisation via recruitment, onboarding, advocacy, and knowledge sharing across the broader engineering ecosystem
Key requirements
  • Significant experience defining and delivering technology strategy with measurable business value
  • Deep expertise in software engineering best practices including CI/CD, testing strategies, and DevOps principles
  • Strong technical leadership in solution architecture, cloud computing, security, observability, reliability and performance engineering
  • Proven ability to optimise processes, lead senior engineers, and influence stakeholders at all levels
  • Excellent communication, mentoring and leadership skills with a collaborative, ownership-driven approach
  • Experience in Retail domain and/or Supply Chain & Logistics, especially Warehouse Management Systems or Warehouse Control Systems
