Principal Technical Architect

You will lead and evolve the enterprise architecture to align with government standards and strategic goals. You’ll shape roadmaps across apps, operations, infrastructure and cloud, guiding transformational change. The role involves mentoring architects, engaging senior stakeholders, and advancing secure, scalable designs that support a data-driven government mission. This is a high-impact position at the forefront of government technology and security.

• Define and evolve enterprise architecture in line with organisational goals and government standards
• Build capability, promote excellence and oversee infrastructure, networks and cloud domains
• Drive architectural roadmaps and transformational change across applications, operations, infrastructure and cloud
• Establish architectural standards, policies and guardrails
• Lead risk identification and governance, ensure compliance with requirements
• Mentor and coach architects and specialists, foster continuous improvement
• Engage senior stakeholders across government and industry, represent the organisation
• Align architecture with business strategy, procurement and operations
• Shape strategies for AI, DevSecOps and identity management
• Review and assure complex solutions/designs using TOGAF framework
• Translate strategic objectives into technical roadmaps and standards
• Influence senior civil servants with evidence-based recommendations
• Maintain enterprise architecture frameworks, standards and roadmaps
• Participate in incident reviews and drive continuous performance improvements
• Design secure or air-gapped platforms within the government sector
• Promote and implement emerging technologies and industry trends

• Degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science or Information Technology
• Hold or willing to pursue TOGAF, ITIL, Agile Project Management, PRINCE2 or equivalent
• Professional/expert certifications such as Azure Solutions Architect Expert, AWS Solutions Architect Professional, VCDX or equivalent
• Experience reviewing and assuring complex solutions and designs using TOGAF
• Proven track record defining and governing enterprise-scale architectures across VMware (private cloud), Microsoft on-premise and multi-cloud (Azure/AWS)
• Ability to translate strategic objectives into technical roadmaps and standards
• Experience leading, coaching and developing senior architects and specialists
• Experience designing secure or air-gapped government platforms
• Knowledge of NCSC, GDS and UK government security frameworks (Secure by Design, Cloud Security Principles, Government Functional Standards, Technology Code of Practice)
• Expertise in VMware (VCF) and Microsoft infrastructure with cross-domain skills (networking, storage, recovery, monitoring)
• Knowledge of Agile, DevSecOps, and CI/CD practices for infrastructure delivery
• Proficiency with Terraform, CloudFormation, Azure Resource Manager, Ansible, Puppet and Chef
• Influence and advisory skills with Senior Civil Servants and governance forums
• Ability to develop and maintain enterprise architecture frameworks, standards and roadmaps
