Principal Test Engineer

In this role, you will design, implement and support electro-optical test equipment and processes for Leonardo’s Precision Guidance products, spanning development to production. You’ll join the test engineering team to specify, integrate and verify test solutions across optical, thermal, electronic and software domains. The position is hands-on and collaborative, with production support and issue resolution at its core. You’ll contribute to delivering robust, validated test capabilities that enable reliable, scalable product performance.

• Interpret test requirements to define a test strategy and plan
• Define a test system and generate work packages with cost estimates across functions
• Coordinate and execute work packages from bid to project completion with governance
• Build, commission and verify new test solutions
• Conduct development testing with environmental stress and production lifespan in mind
• Prepare technical documentation including user instructions
• Support test-system issues in production and investigate root causes of detector faults
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure test alignment with product goals

• HND or above in system or electrical engineering
• Experience in electrical test and electro-optics
• Understanding of optoelectronic devices and systems (lasers, photodetectors)
• Ability to assimilate technical information for design and problem solving
• Ability to validate and qualify mechanical designs under various environmental conditions
• Hands-on laboratory test, diagnostic and measurement experience including electro-optical instrumentation
• Strong organization, planning and execution skills
• Good communication and customer liaison skills
• Careful measurement and analytical skills
• Desirable: Test Software (LabVIEW, MATLAB), soldering SMT components, mechanical design, ECAD tools
• Security clearance pre-employment checks (BPSS) and potential NSV/SC/DV requirements
