Overview

As Principal Test Engineer, you will lead testing strategy and delivery across large programmes, acting as a recognised authority in test engineering. You’ll drive automation, modern testing practices, and quality standards across internal teams and partners. You’ll collaborate with senior stakeholders to ensure robust, scalable solutions that deliver strong customer outcomes. This role combines technical leadership with hands-on coaching to advance Vitality’s test engineering capabilities and adoption of AI-powered testing where appropriate.

Responsibilities
  • Lead end-to-end test lifecycle for large-scale programmes, including planning, estimation, execution, defect management and reporting
  • Own testing strategy, governance and delivery across multiple projects with oversight of QA activities
  • Design and evolve scalable test automation frameworks and promote automation standards, CI and modern engineering practices
  • Provide technical leadership and SME expertise in test engineering, setting standards and best practices
  • Drive quality across distributed systems (microservices, APIs, multi-system integrations) ensuring resilience and fit-for-purpose solutions
  • Influence stakeholders on requirements, design, testability and launch readiness
  • Define enterprise-wide testing standards aligned with best practices and continuous improvement
  • Guide non-functional testing (performance, accessibility, security) across SDLC
  • Research emerging technologies and AI-enabled testing to modernise capabilities
  • Coach and develop test engineering talent and contribute to communities of practice
Key requirements
  • Proven experience leading testing and quality engineering in large, complex technology programmes
  • Deep expertise in test automation, modern testing practices and CI/CD
  • Strong programming ability and experience testing APIs, microservices and distributed systems in cloud environments
  • Experience defining and implementing testing strategies, governance and quality standards at scale
  • Strong stakeholder management and ability to influence senior leaders and partners
  • Track record of coaching high-performing test engineers and adopting innovative technologies
