Overview

As a Principal Rail Telecommunications Engineer, lead the design, assurance, and delivery of telecoms systems for major rail projects. You’ll guide multidisciplinary teams, ensure safety and standards compliance, and manage interfaces and risks. You’ll drive renewals, enhancements, and digital railway initiatives, while mentoring engineers and engaging clients and stakeholders. This role offers a chance to shape critical rail telecoms infrastructure within a global engineering leader.

Responsibilities
  • Lead telecoms design and engineering activities across the project lifecycle
  • Provide technical assurance, design reviews, and engineering governance
  • Support telecoms renewals, enhancements, and digital railway programmes
  • Manage technical risks, interfaces, and system integration activities
  • Mentor junior engineers and support professional development
  • Engage with clients, contractors, and key stakeholders
Key requirements
  • Degree/HNC/HND in relevant engineering discipline
  • Significant rail telecommunications engineering experience
  • Strong knowledge of FTN/FTNx, fibre optics, IP networking, GSM-R, CCTV, PA, CIS, and telecoms transmission systems
  • Experience in Network Rail or major rail infrastructure environments
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status desirable
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills
